Package tourists dress incongruously in Bangkok because they think they're in a vacation resort. The trip was selected out of a glossy color brochure and they lose any concept of being in an urban environment.
Some of the most clownish are in ridiculous garb bought off street stalls the night before.

1. Camo shorts/pants are a common sight in Thailand, if you've only seen them on tourists, you haven't opened yours eyes. I've seen many many examples of thai's wearing just the shorts/pants - to pants and cammo t-shirt to fully decked out walking along Suk. Have a look where all the motorbike taxi’s congregate and you will more then likely see some form of cammo wear.
2. What’s wrong with walking around with a backpack??
3. I seriously doubt that you saw an actual flak jacket being worn, more likely a pocketed vest.
4. Ever thought that military pants can be quite useful with the extra pockets??
5. Doesn’t just happen in Thailand.
I think we can improve the farang image a lot by dressing more appropriately in Bangkok. May I suggest something like, a tailored shirt, short sleeves of course or polo shirt, clean jeans or trousers, shorts with knee high sox & shoes. None of those long shorts either, looks like you did not have enough money to buy jeans and could only afford a 3/4 of a pair of jeans, minus the shortness of the legs type.

My recommendation to you is to chill out, you seem so highly strung on what other people are wear. Yeah, have a little giggle if you must when you see these type of people that meet with your disapproval...but why have a silly rant about it??
And as ThaidUp pointed out, what are you going to suggest about what some of the bargirls wear?? Maybe back to the standard Issan wear??
We may find ourselves a little closer to the Thai people if we adopt a uniform system of dress in this country.

I actually agreed with a lot of what you said about badly dressed farangs, but WTF are you talking about here. Knee high socks, shorts and shoes?!?!?! Now that is a fashion faux pas, and smacks of someone with no style.
BTW if you ever walk around some of the tourist sites in the UK it is the same

What about the Farang women walking around Thailand. It seems the majority of them also think they are going to some jungle village, in their sandals, and grungy wrap things.

Well that depends if you are talking about most office/uni and girls at the high-end shopping centers that would be true, however if you are talking about most of the girls that are with the slobs dressed in T-shirts, shorts and sandals that would not be true. They seem to be a perfect fit. They just get more leaway because they are young and thin as opposed to old and fat.
And actually it does not cost too much for the Bar girls to dress nicely. Many nice tops and pants can be bought for less than 200 THB each.
After you get past the initial luster of the cute skinny BG's you find that they quickly tarnish with age and need to replaced with younger models. You tend to prefer ST and if you want the GFE you be best seeking girls outside of P4P. Fashion sense is one of tall list of items that tend to stack up as the TBG relationship advances, but then again if you look in the mirror and see yourself in shorts, T shirts and flip-flops then you can turn a blind eye.
