Yea!

Hermo's back! Come on over to the 'Z' Hermo, we need you!

As to your question it already has for Americans. The
US dollar drop has eaten into pensions for Americans throughout SEA.

The good news is that the EU ministers recognize this and along with their American counterparts are working to strengthen the US Dollar.

The bad news is that Singapore has (for the time being) decided to keep the US Dollar relativity weak against the Singapore Dollar and that might prevent the US Dollar from strengthening in SEA.

The ugly is that Americans who have retired to SEA and are living on dollar-valued pensions are suffering...

I see that slap-head Ostpolitik Daffy Duck had to get its oar in. That was a quote from a newspaper article you duck's arse.

The linguistically challenged members live on. Herman is German and is a geezer's name.
Hermano is Spanish. Strewth !

My friends in Portugal tell me that their economy is done and out.

Spain has a lot of unemployment and a lot of debt. Property prices are falling.

France is riven with bureaucracy.

Italy is a basket case.

Greece is well, err Greece.

Germany makes and sells cars as long as people are buying them.

The Euro is becoming strong because of the weakness of the Dollar.

With those countries in reality not doing so well.

What is backing the Euro to give it strength ?

Will it 'crash' in the autumn?

Oh, and newspapers don't publish tin foil hat theories? and you don't copy and paste them?

You ask a good question : "What is backing the Euro to give it strength?"

Though you answered that question yourself : an ever decreasing value of the US dollar

Just got back from Barcelona with the old lady- had never been there before and really don't like Spain- but what a GREAT city!!! Of course you have to eat- and if you pick a cheap restaurant and eat like a bird- it almost costs the same as a trip to Eden Club--- hotels no where near as good as my Shangri-la were just under $400/night with taxes- but think about it- the dollar used to be stronger than the euro- then they were equal- then the euro was a bit more- and now its 1.6--

But you in England who complain- try using dollars there- a 3 star dump without a restaurant is 114 pounds- thats ONLY $240- and a large pizza and two glasses of wine is almost $50

Of course I used to get 42 baht to the dollar- and just sent TGF a few bucks at 31 baht/dollar- but 5 star hotels are still closer to $200 than $400-

As they say- its the dollar- stupid- !!

If you count the "sending money", which is cheaper, Thailand and Europe?

I have always focused on what my $ can buy as opposed to the exchange rate, as this combines both issues: a) currency rate and b) inflation which of course equals buying power.

As a person who visits quite often and kept an aprtment in bkk for 3 years, I always looked a tthe situation as the effect on myself and also the effect on others who lived a different lifestyle.

One thing is for sure, the combination of the Baht going form 46 to 31 and the inflation rate on the goods and services I use/consume has cut my purchasing power by over 40% in recent years. That's nasty any way you slice it, but still a lot cheaper than Earope or many other places globally.

I think this really impacts people who live in LOS full more than the sometime traveler or visitor. It hits fixed incomes folks the most.

Be interesting to compare the price of idential items in Los & the USA. The Economist uses a thing called the Big Mac Index which compares prices of Burgers in most Countries. So whats the going rate for Big Mac's in Los & the USA?

Agreed - I recall that I used to be able to get roughly 100,000 Baht for $2,100 - while now, the same $2,100 only gets me roughly 65,000 Baht.

Seen that way, considering most purchase prices of 'goods' in LOS have remained more or less constant (my room has gone from 1,850 Baht to 2,100 Baht - BFD), that's a serious drop in purchasing dollar for each dollar - Thanks Prez Bush.
