yes BK, thats true, I mean not many international cities have an aquarium, let alone a third world country, or indeed an aquarium that is as good as bangkoks one
so instead of moaning about $20, if you want to go, go, if you dont, then dont go, its easy
$20 is a reasonable price to pay for a new large aquarium entrance
yes it thailand, everything is supposed to be cheap, but it wasnt cheap to build it
like the people who go to distil / scirocoo etc or any 5* hotel then complain that the dinner cost a lot
well a) its a 5* hotel but b) actually it is STILL a lot cheaper than 5* in europe etc
5* hotel thailand $200 a night
5* hotel hong kong $1,000 a night
london $750 a night
new york $600
l.a $250
take it all into consideration first!

I have to say that first of all I really like Siam Ocean World. It is a fantastic place and outclasses many other similar sites in the world. I heard they spent some 30 million USD on it and I can believe it.
So naturally they want a return and to run it must also cost a small fortune. I have no opposition at all to the admission price we non-thais pay. But I also have grumbled a bit to myself when you see that in this place - as in many others - you have the lower price for thais. Sad or bad - until I start to think: What is a normal salary in Bangkok? 6, 8 or 10.000 baht a month? An amount that we might spend in one night just for "fun". They dont have that luxury option.
And after all - the Ocean World is probably meant first of all for their own citizens in their own country?! So they put a price we pay - and then they discount it for the lower paid thai population. Ok - one might argue it should be same for all, discrimination etc. But is it not WE who apply pressure to the locals with our ways and manners and in a way pushing the price structure and inflation upwards? Can be debated of course - but personally I see it as a discount for the countries own population and with my higher price - I help to run the place and finally: Does it make a large hole in my wallet? Of course not......
One might argue that in such a large and serious business as Siam Paragong these practices should be abandoned - and with enough many complaints - maybe they will! On the other hand you can go to Robinson and get discounts because you are a tourist - which the locals canīt - so somewhere there is always a balance! And really - who can honestly moan about the general price level in LOS?! I know I donīt!

Not sure it's the right thread but you started it... I like both Sirocco and Mezzaluna and find them worth every penny except perhaps for the french wine and wherever it comes from caviar. But the new prices in lebua are insane - and the rooms still pretty lousy with low ceiling and little light. Public rate is 550K a month for a 3BR serviced apartment and they "offered" us a corporate rate of 450K... possibly negotiable... a rip off IMO.
As of the double pricing I utterly dislike the idea but can't fight it off every place and in this special aquarium did a little blunder when I reminded the missus how nice it was on our first visit there - it appeared the lady that day must have been an extra as the official Miss had never set a foot in this aquarium before 
I still bought a year ticket for everybody in tow upon last visit but quite frankly prefer my fishbowl filled with northern thai pussy.

I can support the dual pricing. As a tourist lisk others have said you can get Tourist discoount cards for shopping which locals cannot get and you can get VAT tax rebated that locals cannot. In effect locals pay VAT tax that pay for many services within the country of Thailand.
As a foreign resident in Thailand I am able to get Thai prices on many things such as entrances to Thai parks by showing them my Thai driver's license. Being that the National park system is probably supported some by of the tax collections.
Also, as a resident I can purchase various discount cards by International hotel chains that given substantial discounts such as 50% off when dining with 2 people.
The people who really get screwed is the Japanese, but they deserve it as they demand their exclusitivity.

I just meant you started talking about Sirocco. Agree with you actually.
Western faces with thai residency getting local prices when entering national parks and other places practicing double pricing has been reported wrong on few instances already. Now "hit and miss" is so closely attached to Thailand HAM should replace LOS so the contrary is probably also true.
It's also 5% tourist discount for Robinson against 100 to 1000% (one thousand percent!!! ) foreign face increase in most other double priced place... not exactly comparable is it??
It's a lesser percentage in massage parlours but that one is totally race motivated and even another issue as it seems to apply only to non east asian customers.
As of the 50% discount cards for residents, are they linked to specific credit cards ? What cards are exclusively open to the resident public? How do you find them out?

Well I can only speak from experience I got the discount from the Thai parks.
Now the best arguement for the MP pricing that I heard "Farangs have bigger cocks and f*** longer than Asian men so wear out my girls faster so I need to charge more"
