Dave, I think I'd make international headlines if I tried to board with pepper spray as cabin-baggage! eeeek Aurum... If I did find pepper spray in BKK... it wouldn't even carry it with me in LOS. It's purely for a bit of Dutch courage here at home. Packripper... I have never and will never get into a fight... so I don't want it to use in a fight or anything. My "tactical options" are kinda limited I think... to screaming my head off... running... praying, lol. (I'm short, small built, female.. and couldn't fight my way out of a wet paper bag) . I think if nothing else pepper spray would give me a sense of security... allbeit perhaps a false one. I'd never heard of the antidotes to it tho and mail order is an option I'd never thought of.

JackRabbit present... X: actually there is no antidote but several things as person being on drugs , certain imbalance of the mental state ( is the phrase "crazy's rage" right ?) or low percentage of the pepper can smooth the effect and person stays functional (more or less). JR

Jack Rabbit.... <<You declared peoples carrying defensive tools in Thailand being cowards >> No I didn't. The post before mine did. <<AND in same breath You ask pepperspray , because You feel better with it back home>> Yes I did ask that. <<I started this thread for information , not for examining mental state of carriers.>> Myquestion re pepper spray was to gain information too. The only persons mental state I have made any reference to is my own... and that was jokingly and purely because the post exactly before my first post made reference to carrying knives being cowardly. Let's say a move to ensure no one comes back and says "only cowards carry pepper spray", so I was saying, yep I'm a coward. And I also made it clear I don't need the pepper spray for LOS... but for home. <<Thailand is home for thai peoples and they know the tunes better than most of us.Choice is theirs , so are the reasons.>> J.R... I think either you are slightly confused as to who said what and why... or I can't write or comprehend English as well as I thought I could. I have made NO judgement about anyone who carries anything for self defense (except for myself). Thanks however for your points on the pressurisation... I really need to rethink this. I did realise the risk of being stopped at customs when I got back here.... but I was just thinking of doing the dumb blonde with the vacnt airhead smile act if that happened. I'm sorry if I have offended you or Thai people in general... but I am sure if you reread my posts and those before me you will see that was not my intention. And just for the record... I don't think carrying something purely for self-defense is cowardly.

hola JR, Aurum is right about that legality thing. At least that is about what it is from the possession of firearms point of view. Permit to carry can be issued to business owners and those with "necessity to carry." Of course gold and jewelry shop owners fall in to this. Gold shops (since there are so many of them), you'll hear of a few attempted robberies each year. The monetary amount is just a little to check if you're a heroin junkie or just someone planning to rob said gold shop. If you had a permit to carry a concealed firearm, and a cop happens to wonder about a knife or baton you are carrying, you could probably explain it (your "necessity to carry") to him politely and not have any problems. I find the cops here quite sympathetic to the plight of upstanding citizens. ;)

Well, if you do not want to carry anything, why not learn some self defense like Akido. There is an instructor teaching it at the Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 11, every Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Call 01-697-4877 for inquiries.
