I'd agree with your assessment there Oaktoad.....a lot of rugby people cite the pads and helmets as reasons why rugby is tougher.....I think of helmets as weapons just as much......but since rugby has gone professional (approx 6 years) players have increased in size, strength and stamina.....it's a far more punishing game...and I think we'll see career spans dropping...(though hopefully not to the average 4 years of an NFL running back...though is that injury or ability?) Anyway.....though I am a Whiners fan....I'd love to see the Silver and Black in the Super Bowl...but I agree...I think there are only 3 NFC teams in it...and we ain't one..... However....I not sure the Raiders will be there myself for the reasons you site.

Guys, relax!! first of all the raiders suck!!, Miami punked them off nicely on sunday. Ganon's hand isn't 100%, the ball will "slip" out of his hand when it counts the most. I would watch out for san Diego. Holmes is gone this week for KC, and maybe , just maybe Flutie will start. My $$$ is on SD, or ATL to win it all. free advice, boys, thank me after I make you some $$$

Falcons and Chargers? ÝMaybe next year, this year it's not even certain that either team will make the playoffs. Ý If I were to bet right now on who would get to the Super Bowl, it would be Eagles in the NFC, as to the AFC, well, none of the teams has even clinched a playoff spot with only two games remaining. Ý Maybe the Dolphins, maybe the Titans the way both teams are playing now. ÝCould even be the Steelers. ÝMaybe flip a coin for the AFC rep. ÝWinner will probably be whichever team shows up from the NFC. Rugby: ÝSome pundits have posited that American football is more dangerous because of the helmets and pads. ÝNot just because they can be used as weapons, but because of the fall sense of security that they can provide. ÝThere are usually several deaths each year from playing American football, from both the training regimen (big, often overweight guys working out too long in the sun) and from serious injuries inflicted by the sport. ÝThis is not too mention the severe leg injuries that often occur because of big guys, with their feet planted, shifting direction and getting hit by equally big guys. ÝThe size and speed that some of these guys have is immense. ÝImagine 6'5", 330 lbs running at 4.5 second 40 yards*. ÝYeah, we've got that. *Handy metric conversion: 196 cm, 150 kg (28.7 stones), 36.6 meters

not many guys at 330 that can do 4.5 forties, but still, just think about having your leg in the wrong position and having that 330++ guy fall on you .. the speed that the game is played at is pretty amazing...with rugby you don't get hit the same way .. you get hit a lot (punched, stepped on, etc), but as a rule the guys are not moving so fast.. also, when you get the ball pitched back to you there are few times that you are open for a hard hit right away.. compare that to a WR getting the ball while stretched out and getting hit hard by a DB that is moving very fast and aiming to put a hurt on you ... You could make a case that the best athletes in the world are playing in this game and playing it very hard.. many of these guys are as compassionate as Mike Tyson in the ring.. just can't bite an ear off if they guys are wearing helmets They are both very tough games, just very different in the risk area for serious injury ... I always chuckle a bit when I watch Rugby.. the guys get off the guy tackled and sort of kick him as they get up .. or maybe push his head into the mud ... Rugby is not really a gentleman's sport either

I must admit I thought the 330...4.5 stat was a bit off so I did some research on this years draftees....and although they didn't live up to that...some pretty impressive stuff..... OFFENSIVE TACKLES Bryant McKinley...taken 7th overall by Minnesota 343lbs...156kg 5.13 in the 40-yard dash; 1.93 in the 10-yard dash; 365-pound bench press; 410-pound squat; 285-pound power clean; 27 ‡-inch vertical jump; 35 ‡-inch arm length; 9 æ-inch hands. Also found Mike Williams...375lbs.....5.3 for the 40.......but he could never do it with a Heineken in one hand and a BG in the other..... DEFENSIVE TACKLES Albert Hainsworth III (No less)....320lbs taken 15th overall by Tennessee 5.09 in the 40-yard dash; 425-pound bench press; 34 1/8-inch arm length; 9æ-inch hands. Most of the guys I found at 4.5 in the 40....were 220lb running backs. Certainly superb physical specimens but not one of them could play 80 minutes of rugby......totally different sports and despite similar roots...not really comparable. For a rugby player.....250lbs would be big....probably not as quick over 40 as a comaparible NFL player....but much greater stamina, and ball skills. The wages packets are also a wee bit different, rugby having been an amateur sport until 1995/6. If the game changes at the rate it has.....who knows what changes may need to take place. Rugby players also play close to 12 months a year for some successful players....and over 50 (competitive) matches...NFL players play a maximum of 19 if they win the Super Bowl. Two superb sports!...now Oaktoad...back to girls in silk shirts feigning injury......

** Spoilers Warning ** Just a quick update for you "unfortunate" brothers stuck in LOS for the playoffs: Falcons crush Packers at Lambeau, after getting gifted into the playoffs by the inept Saints... Jets crush Colts at home... Browns blow a 17 point second half lead to lose to the Steelers at Heinz Field... and right now the 49ers are staging the second spectacular home team comeback of the day. The Niners were down by 24 points, but they are now only down by 8 with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth as they march for the tying TD. More to come as warrants. You may now return to your regularly scheduled BG!
