I don't think anyone's naive enough to think it doesn't happen, but what we are talking about here is OUR own personal responsibility, and integrity, which presumably doesn't change simply because we spend time where the standards are lower, or non-existent.
Too often, people do what they think they can get away with, and values are FAR too negotiable. When it comes to stuff that has a negative effect on kids, I think we should let those of questionable integrity know that it's not acceptable.
I spend time in Thailand with eyes fully open, and can discriminate readily between what is and isn't good for me. Not so with kids. The fact that there are shoddy and unscruplulous schools operating doesn't justify the teachers who lie to get their jobs. We should do better than that. The kids who are subjected to this crap are at a point in their lives where teachers are EXTREMELY influential, and anyone who gives that short shrift is beneath contempt. All the whining on this board about corruption, and yet some are willing to teach kids that it's how things should be done.
I fully support BigDUSA's intention to get some training, and apply his experience to doing a good job. And, I will grant that there are those who would do a good job of teaching, in spite of their lack of a diploma. But a fake TESL? Bullshit. The sad thing is that there are schools that probably wouldn't care, and don't bother to evaluate prospective teachers' effectiveness...

Well there are fakes and shams and rip off artists in every country around the world.
There are also people who rip off the system shamelessly.
Does that mean we should all follow that path.
I don't think so.
If we don't have some rules and standards what do we have to fall back on.
What sort of society would we have if everybody ripped off the system.
Being properly qualified will at least ensure that you have the background knowledge to assist you in what for you is a new area of work.
I have always believed in doing a good job regardless of what is going on around me. I need to for my own peace of mind. Even thou my present job enables me to spend far too much time on the net when i do things i try to do the best job possible.

I agree that faking credentials of any type is not acceptable , but in the teaching field even more so.
It's down to the Thai government to tighten up the checking procedures when issuing work permits.
I taught in Bangers briefly 7 years ago, all I needed was proof of a degree, I had a copy of my B.A, as far as I know it was never verified by my employer at the time ( Christ all they needed to do was make a phone call)
Taksin realises that English is needed by his people , maybe he will get the ball rolling, and change the work permit requirements( if theres some money in it for him maybe....)

It is still possible to get a TEFL job in LOS with fake (or non-existent) credentials, but you will soon find that the better jobs - in terms of both pay & conditions - will require you to give a demonstration lesson. Without training, you will just make a fool of yourself. Don't think that there is no competition for the good TEFL jobs in LOS, because there certainly is these days.
You can get a recognised TEFL certificate for about US$1,000 in LOS following a 4-6 week course. You should do this because:
1) Your students (kids or adults) are paying what is often big money for them to learn English, and you are simply defrauding them if you don't know what you're doing.
2) You are quite liable to go to pieces in LOS if you know yourself to be a fake. There are plenty of expats here who have lost all self-respect, and they are not a pretty sight.
3) You will feel far more confident about teaching. It's all very well musing vaguely about TEFL from thousands of miles away. When the time comes to get up in front of a class, you will be shitting yourself. At present, you only know how to speak & write English, you know nothing about TEFL. A course will teach you how it works, how to use the teaching materials, how to plan & conduct a lesson and many tricks of the trade. It should also give you some supervised teaching experience in front of real-live Thai students.
I did a TEFL certificate course myself on arrival in LOS, although I've never used it as I was lucky enough to land a job in my own field quite quickly. The course included giving 6 lessons to Thai students - which although nerve-wracking at first, was also great fun. The course taught me tons of stuff I didn't know, and at the end of it I was FAR more confident about teaching for real than at the beginning. So if you want to get involved in TEFL, I'd say do a course for your own sake if no-one else's.

you know what I don't get.... why even bother using a fake TEFL certificate when they are so easy to get (qualify for) legitimately.
Anyone with a good enough command of the English language to even consider teaching English as a foreign language should sail through the TEFL certification.
It's not exactly rocket science we're talking here.

Just to clarify, a TEFL course is not really about English, it is about teaching. And it is perfectly possible to have a thorough command of the former while knowing squat about the latter.
People are often under the illusion that they can teach, just like they think they can write, tell a story or take photographs. The reality is that the vast majority cannot do any of these things to a professionally competent standard without training.
