Porn webmasters earn 200,000 baht a month from dirty photos

Webmasters could earn at least 200,000 baht a month from making pornographic websites, a Chulalongkorn University researcher said.
Sama Komolsing, one of the researchers on ``Illegal businesses on the internet: a study on pornographic websites,'' said there were 100 webmasters for pornographic sites in the country now and the number was increasing because the money is good.
Mr Sama said there were two ways for webmasters to earn money from pornographic sites. They could earn 50 cents, about 20 baht, each time web visitors click on the website's banners. They also earned around half the membership fees of US$45, about 1,900 baht a member, every time someone joined a site.
``In one day, a site could draw 1,000 web visitors and up to 12 new members might sign up. So they could earn up to 20,000 baht per day for being webmasters.''
An ex-pornographic webmaster he knew made two pornographic websites as a sideline. He worked as a programmer for a company where he made 10,000 baht a month but he managed to buy a 3- million baht house and a 1.5 million baht car within two years.
``The money is good, which is why more people are drawn into the business,'' said Mr Sama.
The webmasters tended to be programmers, high school and university students.
The job required basic knowledge of information technology and English.
``It costs around 12,000 baht to set up a pornographic website.
``If they are making 20,000 baht a day, they will get that back in the first week,'' he said.
``The law is too soft on people involved in pornographic websites, producers and consumers. Webmasters are fined no more than 3,000 baht if they are caught and there is no law to deal with pornographic website visitors yet.''
Mr Sama suggested the government find ways to stop their income rather than block a site's address, because webmasters could easily switch to another one.
Montana Sitasuwan, another researcher on pornographic websites, said Thailand has more than 2,000 pornographic websites.
Phunthip Kanchanachitra Saisoonthorn, a law expert at Thammasat university, said social pressure could shame people into stopping.
Sungsidh Piriyarangsan, the team leader at Chulalongkorn university, said he did not believe calling in police was the best solution, as porn sites would simply give them another means of earning illicit income.
