Much as we may dislike our own cultures, it is difficult to adapt to another one let alone one as different as Thailand. I lived in France for 4 years and I speak French but 4 years day-in day-out in a small village was enough. IMHO the ideal is about 6 and 6 between your own culture and your chosen other. Just when you're sick of the BS, PC, smog, stupidity or whatever, you can eff off to the other place. It helps if the other place is cheaper, sunnier and "friendlier" also.

I wonder if she is right?
I think a lot of people who come to Thailand for more than just a holiday are a bit f***ed-up (to a greater or lesser degree) to start with. That doesn't help. It's a very easy place to go from being a bit f***ed-up to very f***ed-up in a relatively short time.

I know heaps of expats who have lived here for over a decade. Some have decent jobs, some retired. All happy as hell. Being of working age, low on money and no job...well that is a way to make it difficult. Plenty of educated girls, smart, curious, cute. Just that most of them are not bar girls. Edge

Being a newcomer to Thailand, I defer to the more worldly views of those who have been here before, but I'm reminded of Dr Johnson's quote about London. "A man who tires of London, is tired of life." I can't imagine being tired of Thailand, but I guess it depends on your reason for being here in the first place. If the reason is to 'escape' from issues in farangland, that's doomed to fail. The issues people face will remain, even if the environment changes. If you come as a sex tourist, I can see that that would get a bit tedious also. Too much of a good thing, spoils the appetite. If you come as a retiree, then the issues facing you will be the same as retiring in the west - making yourself relevant to the environment in which you life. I can see that that would be harder in Thailand than in the west because of the language issues. But i'd see that as a challenge; not an insurmountable obstacle. I haven't been bored for a minute. I work during the day and am surrounded by a great team of people in the office. I go home early (not like the 8pm-9pm stints that were commonplace in Sydney), and I relax at home, have a swim, meet up with the gf or wander off to a bar to watch the world go buy. I can honestly say I've never been happier. It's not a 'i'm going mad partying' kind of happy. It's a deeper, more peaceful knowledge that I am in an environment that I truly love. I'm already looking around for opportunities and ways to make sure I can stay as long as possible.

Well Stickman sure does seem to have gone negative beyond his bar girl warnings. I am not reading him much anymore. As for me, I am semi retired here now for 9 months. I know this is where I belong right now because my TGF is the center of my life. I can see getting bored or longing to spend some time back in the US, but a need for change is something we might have anywhere or anytime. I think if I was working at a job I enjoyed, as I did most of my career, I would not have any problems with that. Keeping busy solves a lot of problems in life. As someone said above... if your needs change, go with it and do what you need to do. If that is moving out of LOS, fine. If it is making some other major life change like getting or changing a job or moving to another city, fine too. One day at a time. Carpe Diem

Scobie/Edge, The people I know who live in LOS who closely follow the lifestyle of the people you describe as "happy as hell" also seem to be very content. They do have strong long term relationships however and they did not come here for the bars or the girls. Maybe that says something ?

Yeah, but that was before they pedestianised Old Compton St (yes, I know it didn't last long, but 1995 marked a distinct change to the area), too many tourists started coming all the year round and every cocktail bar except Trader Vic's started asking 'Have you made a reservation?' even on Wednesday nights. Traffic jams in Oxford Street on Xmas day since 1997...people in town at Easter? And bloody Hoxton got trendy. Madame Jo Jo's went to hell, they redecorated The Ship in Wardour Street! Borough High Street even got 'trendy', FFS! Pre-Ministry-crowd my arse. The lure of the Way Out club alone was not enough... Go East, young (-ish) man, go East.
