I will be there with a great girl. I would be happy to be with her in Siberia. As already mentioned, we will avoid the western coast and go to the other side of the Island to Phuket town and inland or even off the Island by car. The last time I was there in June 2003, I hardly went anywhere, just stayed in Patong and indulged massively in the P4P scene. This time I can see all those things that I missed. There's lots to see there that isn't water or beach based. I'll maybe report back when I'm there for the benefit of others During the last couple of years, they've had SARS, the Asian Bird Flu epidemic and now this. I'm not going to desert them now. I'm going to have the best New Year ever with this girl.

Hello ! people are screaming to get out of there, there are burning dead bodys on the beach (you wanna take a tan there) One guy I saw talking on the TV had to drag his Dead wife on a old door in to a temple just so they could not burn her. He wanted to take her home RIP There is at least 2000 swedish people missing in the sea phi phi and ko lanta. ( you want to meet them while dyving) I saw today people stuck dead in the rumble on the beach. There is no beach left there is no Bangla road left there is no fun at all in Phuket. Give them a month and go relocate in Samui or something PLEASE!

HJ If the “The hotel and resorts association” say don’t come and in the light of all the other good advice you have had and you still intend going, conceder my predictions: •Although most of the human bodies will have been recovered there will be the rotting corpses of animals & marine life amongst the wreckage, washed up & floating on the sea. •There is report of utilities having server damage particularly water and sewage. •The above will heighten the risk of diseases; (hope you have had all your jabs, typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, etc) … •Many migratory workers from other parts of Thailand will have left to find work elsewhere. •Many locals will be in mourning for loved one’s, lost livelihoods, homes & possessions. •They will be keen to take your money but will have very little to give in return. & Please don’t speak for Britain when your government is advising you not to travel to affected areas… BB

well done Hugh. you and I are in a minority here,i would be there tomorrow if I could. Bangkoksexy. no Bangla Rd left?,where is your info from? there are many pics on the Internet and while it looks like carnage, most of the rubbish will have been cleared up. many Bars were open 12 Hours after the event after huge efforts from the staff to clean up. my friends Bar was damaged but still open on the same night. have to agree with Hugh's comments about a certain Nation West of the UK. after what happened in NYC many people were too scared to travel thinking they would be next. many Countries around the World lost Millions of $ because the greatest Nation in the World were too scared to travel....... flame away Guys,i love all the abuse. Basil. when will be a good time to visit? can you give us a timeframe when all bodies will be accounted for? should we all stay away for 5-6 Years in case a body might be discovered? i don't know where you are getting you info from from but surely RESIDENTS know what is going on? and they are posting here telling what is going on. but are all the folks many Miles away are more informative? and I would like see the evidence that many the migratory workers are leaving. care to share with me and others where you got this info from? if you can I will quit my job. and I mean ALL EVEIDENCE THAT MANY OF THEM HAVE LEFT...... but a question for you Guys. if you were there now, would you be bribing the Airlines to get you out because you are so scared? looking forward to the abuse I will get.......

I'll be there in Three week's myself. I'll let you all know what it's like. Without wanting to look too callous, do you think prices will drop because of so many people staying away?

I think that does indeed sound pretty callous. What is the point of going to Thailand, to a recovering disaster zone no less, and then trying to cheap charlie your way around? Thailand is already cheap. If you're on a Western salary then why sweat it? It's only money to us, but to them it can mean a whole lot more. I just got done making a couple small donations to http://www.unicef.org/ and http://www.redcross.org. I do stuff like this because it's money I won't even miss and yet there are people who may need it just to survive on.

Cheers Popsecret. I'm on a tight budget on this trip for a couple of reasons so I can't exactly afford to throw money away. The bottom line, whether it sounds good or bad, is that the less I spend on hotels, flights, etc the more I can spend in bars and on girls. I think that would be better for myself and the small businesses and girls. I'm not too worried about airlines, etc.

nokna, your point about Phuket is valid. If I could go there and HELP get Phi Phi (or Phuket) put back together, I would go. But if I went, I'd fly 22 hours and I could only stay for one or two days then I'd have to return to Amereka. I looked into it, but the reality is that I cannot right now. And I don't know whether they would allow me anywhere near Phi Phi to help. My point is that Phuket might not be a great place for a HOLIDAY in the next few days. Your point about your beloved ex-colony being filled with scared people... that is not what this thread is about, so I will refrain from comment.

Thanks Nokna for your support. I'm leaving in an hour on my way to Heathrow. I'll be on Phuket on Friday 31st provided that Phuket Airline is flying people in. I'll try and get to an internet cafe at some stage, maybe in Phuket town perhaps and provide an update for the forum. Basil Brush, you know damned well that the Government is just covering their arse advising people not to go there. I might not speak for you, but I still reiterate that most Brits are made of sterner stuff in the face of adversity. I might well find myself mucking in to help if I can make a valid contribution. Otherwise, lots of local businesses will deem even the arival of new tourists as a sign of solidarity in itself.

Finally heard from my "friend" who works at one of the bars in Phuket. She is planning on moving back home with her parents because in her broken English email she managed to communicate that there is not much left in Phuket. Said she would come back in February when I return to Patong beach. Her exact words: "I come back home because everything in Phuket it not good. have may people die." There will be plenty of time to help Phuket recover by spending my $U.S. currency there in the future without taking away resources better used to take care of the locals... LS
