Torq,

good points, all. And as you've seen close up and personal from your experienes off the rails in upcountry Thailand, and elsewhere, poverty sucks, and the people upcountry will be the first to tell you that. I'm also trying to avoid the "American retirement dream." Hell, if that happens, somebody please mail me Hemingway's shotgun!

NINGNING
So like always in life money is the key.
Once you have left your home country it is not easy - if possible at all - to get back and to get back on track (unless you are 25 years old).
I am sceptic about the "chucking it all" attitude because your exit options are limited. Sure, those who don't dare don't win.
Still better think twice about it and have a well devised plan. Sure, no plan ever survives contact with reality.

You can call me unassertive but I am rather be the rich tourist for 8 weeks a year, having money to burn, than to be a poor fool, eating the leftover in the soi all year round.

Until now I think that 50,000 Baht a month is what I need for retiring (given I have my own condo) - if I am wrong please correct me.
So I have to save up till I am 45, 50 or even 55 until I can live there (if by then I still wanna live there). Maybe I wanna have my own condo by then or maybe I prefer to be flexible and only rent some place. Maybe I wanna have a partner then or just butterfly around. Whatever it will be like, the options should be mine.

The worst end of the stick is to end up as a farang beggar - no money and deprived of health, self-respect and pride in a country that is not yours.
So you better make sure you know what you are doing and that there is more than one (exit-) option for you.

correct... that's the reason I don't move to Thailand. It is about my current standard of living. I can't see giving up the way I live here to move lower in the economic rung just to have pussy. I can get pussy here if I want, although more expensive. Like you said, far better to go to LOS throughout the year. I spend about 35% of my time in LOs, soread across 6-9 trips per year.

Keeps the place fresh and gives me something to look forward to. I keep an aprtment in BKK year round to make my life easier but I am not so sure that living there is right for me. For many people, to live in LOS works and that is great. I think it comes down to a personal decision.

My wife has her own issues about living here or in LOS, but to me, give me standard of living any time over the 'other' things in life.

Hey Guys
Each to his own. I have mates who are retired in farangland and are happy with the country walks, bridge club (nothing like the Eden club eh?) and Sunday bowls. Better to see what suits the individual rather than run down others' ideals. sorry to gibber.
Hell, for me it is Thailand. Love it. Don't think that it is just the pussy, that is great, variety and quality, wonderful. For me the farang in thailand lifestyle is awesome. 12 months of great weather a year, love the food, the outdoor life, beaches, mountains, waterfalls, cheap shopping........you know, the whole package wrapped in pussy fur!
Not sure if 50k baht, around $1200 a month would do me though.

Nothing wrong with dreaming about retiring in LoS but I do feel it would be best for most people to live here for a couple of years, to see what the place and the people are really about, before making long-term plans to come here in one's late 50's or 60's.

I mean, what if you have based your entire retirement plan on living here, only to arrive aged 60 and find life isn't what you expected it to be.

What is the option then?

The Thailand you see as a visitor, even three or four times a year, is entirely different from the one you see as a resident.

I have the option of working in the States later this year, permanently. I've had two years here.

Right now I feel like tossing a coin.

It hink the best possible option is to be able to afford to retire in your home country and then visit or stay in Thailand whenever you please.

Of course this requires more cash but for me this is the best of both worlds.

It is reassuring thou that if you don't have enough to retire in the west and live a decent life that you could have the option of retiring in Thailand. It is a nice fallback option.

Another major cosideration in retirement is health, and as we grow older air travel can be less appealing.

I certainly know one 57 year-old who is taking a significant risk every time he flies.

Late 50's early 60's you really need to be thinking of where you intend to stay on a permanent basis.

if you think $4000 per month (see original post that started this thread) is millionaire status, then I must be a billionaire.

$4,000/month is really just barely middle class in the States but in BKK, it can really go a long, long way.....Let's say you rent a top notched serviced apartment for $1,500/mon., budget for food of $600/mon, all other essentials ( insurance, clothings.....etc) for another $600/month, that still leaves you with $1,300/mon for pussies and entertainment. That is 52,000 bahts a month. Say you "take home" top level talents for 3,500 bahts 2-3 nights a week, that only costs you about 40,000 bahts/month. You still have 12,000 bahts=300 bahts/day for your drinks......etc. I think this is a reasonable budget for living it quite well in BKK. I would add another $1,000/mon to make it really top level. I say $5,000 US/month in BKK will make you feel like you are a "millionaire."
