To be honest with you, atl, I don’t mind at all that he wrote it or that anyone likes to read it. I like to be supportive of anyone reading anything and/or writing anything (I believe the skills are that good for people), and that means you too--but actually I am more unhappy that someone is making a movie of the book. My apologies to Mr Burnett's bank account. The fact that he spends so much time talking about a subject he doesn't know well or in perspective--the Sex Tourist GoGo Zones--and depicting them as if they are the most important and significant venue of prostitution in Thailand (when in fact they are a sliver) and as if they are a well known oasis for the majority of upcountry girls (when in fact they are known at all and/or wanted by relatively few) is a very distorting view of Thailand and Upcountry Thai girls and the Thai Youth of Today in general, and their interests and sex scenes and ambitions, that I would rather see not publicized further than it has been. More fanfare about the “lewd and lascivious” GoGo's of Thailand--who needs it? What will that do? More clampdowns, for one... It gives the wrong picture of most upcountry girls, two … And of course, his information is inaccurate even when he does talk about them: imagine a typical Soi Cowboy GoGo having 20 rooms of upstairs for sex. Or CNN coming to the opening of a GoGo in Soi Cowboy (that's all we need). Take, for instance, TPE's book, which I did enjoy more, about the private investigator in Bangkok, but also concerned with these topics. That was nonfiction and it made no ridiculous claims that were not the opinion/insights of the author’s own gained through his own work experiences (even when he gets laid, apparently). Although it was nonfiction, I mention it simply because it is also concerned with similar topics and I want to show a disparity between real knowledge and pretended knowledge. And that last example leads me to another aspect of the point of view of this book: all these past life visions the protagonist is having. I hope newbies don't think that your average Thai citizen, policeman, or monk thinks like that! Only the freak that the author has created does. However, the characters in novels are usually extraordinary individuals, so this can be forgiven, despite how unrealistic it is. No one, for instance, believes that all Russians wander around cities in the torments of a Raskolnikov; or that all Americans wiseacre about angelic sperm like Ishmael on the Pequod; that Irish are all uncontrollably decomposing their minds like Beckett’s Malloy on his bicycle; or that all Moroccans are flying as high as any character from Mohammed Mrabet! So … Without going out on a limb and talking about the process of constructing a novel, I would have to say that I love to see imagination based on some real world point of reference or thorough experience of a certain subject; even in the case of psychologies. There are so many imaginative minds out there. And people have written interesting fantasies of faraway places. It's just that in this case, it is a fantasy of a faraway place that luckily few enough people know well enough (in Hollywood) not to call him on. A fantasy, in this case, that I do not care to see popularized. My apologies to all who may have really enjoyed the book. I remember that reading is one of best things we can do for our minds. We each have our own tastes. I am, again, glad and grateful for the opportunity to encounter different points of view.

Pardon... It has been noted that certain forms of abstract humor, such as sardonicisms and irony, are difficult to capture in print on a computer screen. My sense of humor is not too sharp today anyway--too busy. If you are joking, then it wouldn't matter objectively if you'd read the book or not, and know what I am referring to, and what I am calling ridiculous. If you are not joking, it would matter if you had read it, and know what I am referring to. Because then we would have either an honest question from you, which I would try to answer more thoroughly and sincerely, as usual, based on my experience of the Thai culture, language, daily life, and psychology; or we might have a disagreement, and I would be forced to do the same. I hope it's a joke. I am really worn out today. But no problem. I am glad to be of any service that I may, concerning the peoples of Thailand.
