David, you are comparing apples to oranges. Let me put this in perspective with a couple of questions. When you go to a restaurant, do you tip the waitress for good service? When you stay in a hotel, do you tip the cleaning staff for good service? When you have a drink in a bar, do you leave a few coins on the tray? You can't compare a diamond or condo saleslady to either my examples or your massage lady. They are worlds apart.

Well EPC as I said not really worlds apart as the condo saleslady or jewelry sales person are comission driven which is in effect a tip by nature. I never understood the tipping to the cleaning staff and have only done so when I left a big mess over the ordinary after a party otherwise: 1. It is just their job. 2. Not really personnal service as this is not my room or house. I guess a tip to the cleaning staff would be warranted if they did some special request or had an extra messy room to clean.

A bit out of subject, but I remember years ago a friend who after some personal problem (divorce), ended up being a cleaning person in the small city where I lived. One day I see him on the street, with his broom, bag and yellow uniform, I say hello and we start chating, then he see a woman placing a piece of paper in his rubbish bag and tell her "Next time PLEASE do throw your rubbish on the ground madame, or I ll be soon out of job..." So you see, not all cleaning people hate to find something to do... Madfrog

Of course an added difficulty arises awkwardly, when you visit Tulips and find that the jewelry sales-lady from the Emporium that you didn't tip because you are going to collect your purchases tomorrow, is moonlighting on her day off and happens to give you the blast of a life-time. Conversely, if you arrive at the Condo sales office and find that the person who is completing the sale for you looks exactly like an ex-Tulip girl whom you tipped generously some time ago because she gave you all 3 holes twice in 2 hours and entered into all sorts of lewd and wondeful past-times that were not massage and it turns out that she is her twin sister who has heard the lot about your performance, tastes and endeavours and even has a full set of photos of you in action, what do you do ? Answer : ask her round for either an informal dinner with no required dress or a late naked breakfast. [ Sorry guys ! I think we've exhausted the topic of what a Tulip lady should or should not get on top of the agreed price for extras, not that I want the discussion to stop. The fact is that different guys have different depths of pocket and what is and has been unquestionably heaven to some is only three-quarter-way there for others. To each, his own and by his own means.]

Now what would really be interesting is the unabashed comments behind the scenes that the Tulip ladies give about the punters here. Oh here comes cheap ass Charlie again time for me to take a Som Tum break.

While I would agree that most of Davids examples are a bit of an apples to oranges comparisons, I don’t think comparing Tulip ladies to bar wait staff, hotel cleaning staff, or a waitress at a restaurant are much of a comparison either. At a bar I pay for my drinks and the bar pays the staff, at the hotel I pay for the room and the hotel pays the cleaning staff, at a restaurant I pay for my meal and the restaurant pays the waitress – any tip is a financial exchange between me and the individual service provider to show appreciation for their individual service. And if I eat or drink at an establishment that has a ++ type of program where they are already changing me a service charge then I rarely tip unless the service is exceptional. When at Tulip one pays for the massage AND settles on a price in advance for the service with the lady. And as for issues related to anal, CIM, two shots, BBBJCIM, and other such niceties – these are part of what draws punters to Tulip. Yes, typically one has to pay extra for such services in many other establishments but just because one has to pay extra somewhere else does not justify tipping at Tulip for the same service. It the ladies at Tulip want to change their strategy and start to charge extra for those services they are free to do so. But the reason many punters go to Tulip is the value of the service as well as the quality of the service changing their pricing strategy or an expectation of a tip kind of spoils that. While I got no issues with guys tipping the ladies at Tulip I don’t think said tip should be automatic. Mel has a valid point in that part of the payoff for the ladies is word of mouth and repeat business if they provide good service.

Hi Chuck- "When you go to a restaurant, do you tip the waitress for good service?" ~~~~~~~~~~~ Always; unless there is a service charge – then no. _____________________________________________________ "When you stay in a hotel, do you tip the cleaning staff for good service?" ~~~~~~~~~ Yes ____________________________________________________ "When you have a drink in a bar, do you leave a few coins on the tray?" ~~~~~~~~~~~ Absolutely always and often tip several of the staff too. _________________________________________ But what does any of this have to do with an ‘independent contractor’ like a Tulip lady charging a fee for service? They are not employed in the sense that they receive a commission or a salary. If everyone went there for a straight massage they would all leave after a while. Their compensation is the ‘extra’ service they offer as a means to earn a living. They put the price on that 'extra service'. I once gave the outside bartender at Shark 4000 for her daughter’s tuition that she was short. I never slept with her nor would I want to. I did it because she is a good person and really needed the help. She very rarely if ever got bar fined and earned a limited income. When I have tipped at Tulips it was never because I felt the lady was not earning enough; It was because she made me feel so good I just could not help myself. I guess tipping is just an individual thing among all of us. I may give one taxi driver 100 THB and another I will count out the exact amount on the meter; all depends on him and his attitude. No set rules for me. Maybe we should start a new 'Tipping Thread' and get this one back to Tulips.

Lots of interesting points posted here. To me there is some confusion as to what the tip is for. To some, the tip seems to be a payment for additional services such as anal or additional shots. To others, that its for exceptional service, to some as an incentive for next time, some, perhaps as a guilt payment because the service provider is relatively low paid, others a more boastful ‘I’ve got lots of money to throw around'. Each to your own, it is after all your money. Personally, I have never been very comfortable with the concept of tipping because I am tight fisted. In many bar beers and go gos, I am becoming increasingly disillusioned with the changing attitude of serving staff who no longer seem content with a few coins as a tip (say 10 or 15 Baht). This was a trait that I first came across in my earliest visits to Bangkok, in some of the Patpong gogos. I find this “tip, tip, tip” attitude much more common than before. If I buy one drink in a bar which might cost, say 80 baht and I pay with a 100 baht note, often a 20 baht note, rather than 2 x 10 baht coins will now be placed on the plate as change. If I try to replace the 20 baht note with a 10 baht coin I am often subjected to howls of protest (Mr. Keenie Ow). If I have had several drinks, then I am happy to tip 20 Baht, but not for only 1 drink. I can brazen it out of course, but that doesn’t make for a happy holiday, perhaps best not to leave a tip at all in these places and retrieve all of my change! Back on topic, I am somewhat surprised to learn that Tulip providers do not get a share from the massage fee. As a Bangkok massage newbie, I have never been to Tulip (only tried Angels, is Kristin back yet?). Does that mean if I opted for a massage only with no extras that the provider would get nothing from the session if I did not tip? In Patong Beach massage shops, I believe that 50% of the massage fee goes to the service provider. Maybe this is because the provision of extras in Patong is probably a lot less common (apart from Soi Kepsap) than in Bangkok.

Quote: from Joe Wood on 8:16 am on April 22, 2008 It should be reciprocated, in kind.
Cheapskates, with little respect of care for others, will disagree. Personally, I agree wholeheartedly with your points - I believe that a tip is in order for service above and beyond the bare minimum. If the service provider leaves me very satisfied, then I believe in doing the same in return

I guess it all depends on your starting point. Is the Dick half in or half out? Is the 1500 Baht for a starfish performance or absolutely mind blowing multi hole, multi ogasmic sex?
