I think you are missing the point, he wasn't asking for a tip, he was inflating his rate because the customer was NOT Thai

Snpark's response explains exactly why cheating and overcharging farangs is so common in Thailand. Sheer ignorance if you ask me.
Both LY and Barrafish have it right. We residents don't think in dollars too, we think in Baht.
It's not the money, it's the principle. That's why in the Western world there are laws which state that if you quote a price (and you might reasonably not expect it's wrong) you have to honor that.
I normally would have tipped 20 baht.
Same thing with taxi drivers. If they are honest I round up to the next 5 or 10 baht. If they take the tip themselves, I'll make sure I get every baht change back.

With all these negative views about Thailand, how about listing some of your positive experiences. I once had ride on a taxi, it was a short ride, and I didn't have any change on me, and the taxi driver said, it's alright, no need to pay.
There have been times, when I have underpaid the taxi driver, i.e. rounding down instead of rounding up the fare. It's a give and take with the taxi drivers, sometimes I pay more, and sometimes, I pay less.
It's also nice when one doesn't have to pay the cover charge to enter some of the clubs, simply because the door guy thinks he knows you.

The lower income earners don't pay any tax at all, as it's below the taxable bracket. And that's probably the majority. And there are many who just get cash like the freelancers.

i personally think it is despicable that you did not even tip 1% or 1 satang for your haircut
its the principle
otherwise after you bf a girl for 1000 baht why do u then "tip" her 500 baht for services?
