for those of you with too much time on your hands.... check this out, page 5 lists country debt defualt sin history, it is eye opening how many country's have defaulted on their debt. And remeber, history repeates itself. http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/chapters/0262195534chapm1.pdf In the U.S. we are going through a complete deleveraging process that will take years to sort out. Slow growth, low interest rates and high unemployment are here to stay for a while. This means a weak dollar. The only way a currency can devalue against this type of storng head wind is two fold and ONLY two fold... 1) direct intervention by the govt. to weaken their currency... doesn't work too oftern and 2) you totally f*** up your own country, which is quite possible.

I agree with Thailife here, the only thing that may force the US to strengthen the USD is if oil prices shoot up above the 100/barrel level (and that is unlikely given current inventories). Any other scenario indicates that a weak USD will support the American economic recovery. Solution for expats.... leverage your USD against currencies that the Baht does poorly against, just remember that any FOREX trading involves a significant risk unless you are capable of holding currencies for the long-term (i.e. you have good cash flow). For those who can I would suggest moving some of your retirement investment to other markets (such as OZ or NZ) which pay dividends/interest in currencies other than the USD, that will mitigate some of the effects of the weak dollar. Solution for youse sex tourists.... either travel to regions where the currency is still weak against the USD or accept the fact that your vacation will cost more cuz to be honest the amount you contribute to the Thai economy is a fraction of their total tourist market ...

My take: * The Thai Govt will maintain high interest rates to keep the Baht strong. * A strong baht means cheap oil imports for Thailand. * Cheap petrol at the pumps mean less civil unrest. * That means the Govt stays in office.

As I dont fly multiple times a year any more or live there full time on a pension im not particularly bothered. When you go on holiday 40 baht or 50 baht for a Euro wont make a difference. Am I being scammed everywhere yes and so what just enjoy it when your there. But im happy where I am had short time here in europe tonight after work with a dominican for 2 k baht. Upside, downside the works done deal and I like short time. Thailand is something else though and takes it a grade higher 10 yrs later and still girls know your name and want to suck your dick. The border between being a customer or an old boyfriend gets fuzzy as we drift on the thailand opium (pussy ) cloud right up until we check in to go home. If thailand is turning to singapore then maybe the philipines is the next thailand. quack quack I thought South Korea had amsterdam type brothels no idea of prices though

SW, If the Govt wants to keep oil cheap they can just subsidize like Malaysia and the PI does, it would be more cost effective and will not damage the export sector. As I stated before there is nothing small players can do to manage their currencies.... not whilst the big boys are fighting: Currency War Bottom line.... hunker down and accept the fact that if you are being paid in USD or EUR you are screwed (but not by a Thai girl) in the near term...

Me old China- Asking around and looking at the net. It looks like the consensus is that the baht will remain strong for the forseeable future. It will not be influenced by any political activity. It will be affected by the passing of the Thai VVIP. That has happened already when the rumours flew. The days of Americans and Europeans having cheap 'fun', are over for the moment.

Brother wolf, A trend is a trend until it changes. We are very bad at picking the point where the trend changes. So ride the momo until it goes against you. If you recall the last scare everyone had really did not change the Baht or the market all that much. I think "institutionally" the country is ready although the simple folks just don't get it. The power brokering seems to have been pretty much completyed, everyone has their piece of the pie pretty much set up going forward. The only wild card is the wild card that has been in the background for a few years now, but that situaqtion seems to have run its course. I think you will still see the normal coalition groups power brokering, but all in all, given the magnatude of the changes in most likely the next few years, money flows have only increased.... Sure it can change and go the other way, but as long as the trend is flowing your way, don't be the other way.
