Thais dress their status and are acutely class-conscious - they make the English seem hopelessly amateurish in this respect. Farang are judged by the same standards. Backpackers get little respect, nor do people who look like them. Appearances matter hugely in LOS. OK, BGs learn that rich farang can look like complete slobs, especially in the beach resorts. But in BKK, it hardly ever pays to dress down. I'd guess the equations in the average BG's head go something like this: well dressed + well groomed + polite manners = high class = money = good guy all round = desirable hook-up. slob + crap manners = farang birdshit = cheap charlie = bad guy = no way In a Bangkok GG bar, for example, this can mean all the difference between that supercutie deigning to catch your eye or ignoring you. No need to go overboard. Unshowy smart-casual is fine. What would an unpretentious middle-class guy your age wear when out on the town back home at the height of summer? Wear that, in even lighter cloth if necessary. If you want to dress down further, I'd say leave it till you hit the beaches.

Greetings: Okay. I gotta ask. Why are so many people worried about how to dress to impress the females or what is acceptable attire?? ŬIt's the same as any other tropical country. In regards to the females, the bottom line is you are paying for the bgf's services and not trying to date her. ŬIt's a sure thing people. As long as you got the money, they really don't care what you dress like or really even look like. This is why ugly people can get laid in bkk when they can't get laid anywhere else. Sorry if that's too direct, but hey .. that's reality. Okay. Sure the bg will appreciate a well nicely dressed person, but I'm sure they won't turn you down because of the lack of it. Besides, dress is subjective. I've seen men dressed in what they would consider a nice looking suit that would be a fashion faux-pau in the U.S. My advice for those of you that are concerned, just open up a GAP, Banana Republic, JCrew catatlog and pick anything you see. So, pay for play and don't worry about what you dress in. Just check your attitude at the door, make sure you have good hygene and go with the flow. The only place you have to be concerned about dress codes are at the temples and high end g-clubs. But, even the g-clubs if you got a membership and spend money at the establishment, they don't really care. The bottom line is unless you look Thai, you are going to look like a tourist. Nothing wrong with that. Just don't act like a stupid one though!! ha ha ha!! Be considerate of the Thai customs, traditions, and people and all will work out fine. IMO: A great attitude will carry you much further with the tg's then a great outfit. Just my 2 cents.

Quote: from Fritz on 7:59 am on April 22, 2003 @ haam sup: On a second thought, I guess you're probably right. Even with a working girl, it might be advantageous to dress well. She will be proud and will certainly gain face among her friends and colleagues if she's seen together with a welldressed farang.
So a Frank Zappa "Titties n Beer" T shirt would probably be a bad idea if you're trying to pick up a GTG or a "higher class" BG?

Naw. You'll find me with a pool cure, a black Billy Squire t-shirt with cutoff sleeves, and a Spice Girls baseball cap. The chicks love, real "wrong side of the tracks" chic.
