Is the place going to be drink in or take away only?  Or is wholesale?  I am a bit concerned about this precious nectar being handled properly.  Also the website was not the best set up I've seen, maybe BK needs to offer his services.

I agree about the sub-standard web site.

From what I understand, it will be take away only, for wholesale, bar owners and amateurs. ÝAnd although they announce 50 varieties, it is not clear if they are all available yet. And as some of these are alive, the way it is stored is important.

Anyway, I will check that out by the end of the week and let you know. I have also sent them an email, let's see their reply.

My favourite (Thai) beer has always been Kloster.

When at the Beer Garden @ Soi 7 recently, I ordered my usual Kloster and was brought the bottle in a stubby cooler. Somehow it tasted odd, but as I was eating a snack at the same time put this down to the food.

When I'd finished the bottle, I lifted it out of the stubby cooler and to my astonishment found it was not Kloster but "Klassik"; the devious mongrels use the same silver collar around the top as Kloster, so you can't tell the difference between the brands when the label's obscured.

When I complained, the bar staff told me that they could no longer get Kloster, but that's obviously BS, as press reports were out late last year to the effect that the Kloster franchise has gone to Boon Rawd (of Singha 'fame') and the former brewers of Kloster have introduced Klassik to stay in business.

Still doesn't explain why a bar serves you a  different brand from the one ordered without first checking with you.

....share your feelings HITMAN. There are many places that currently don't have Kloster beer anymore. They are serving KLASSIK, which definitely has a different taste. I realised this shit early in January at BAMBOO BAR. Thought it was a cheat but later on I realised the same thing was happening at BeerGarden and at several GG-bars in NEP. Have to stuck with HEINEKEN only when a good German or Belgium beer is not available. What a pitty....!!!!

Anyone try "Thai Beer?" I don't know which company came out with it, but it isn't too bad. Not my favorite, but I can drink it with no displeasure.

Still my all time favorite beer is .......Free Beer! any free beer always tastes better than a beer I had to pay for. LMAO!

I had a deep meaningful conversation with a bar owner and he told me that Klassik is just Kloster rebottled and that the change shouldn't be significant. Maybe he was wrong, or maybe I was drunk, possibly both.

I don't think it's really deceitful on the part of bar owners who substitute this. Just as I don't think it's a big deal if they serve me Pepsi when I asked for Coke.

"My favourite (Thai) beer has always been Kloster."

As far as I know, Kloster is a Belgian, rather than Thai, beer. ÝBoon Rawd acquired the distribution rights, but it is still brewed by the Belgian brewer.

Here, in the states, we used to get Singha with the word 'ALE' pasted over the 2 little places on the label that said 'Beer', due to the higher alcohol content. ÝIt was imported by a little storefront company, next door to the restaurant where I met my first Thai girlfriend. ÝThis was around 1981. ÝThe beer was a bit different then; it had a slightly green cast in certain lighting, and a very creamy head. ÝIt seems to have changed a lot in 20 years.

When they were out of it, they always tried to foist Amarit off on the unsuspecting. ÝI never liked it.

Classic K is the new labeling for Kloster because Dr Charoen, owner of Chang, Carlserg, Mekong etc, bought out the original Kloster owners (also Amarit) and now owns every brand of beer in Thailand except for Singha and its associated labels.

Charoen is a nasty bastard who used to work for the Techapaiboon family -- the people he just bought out, best known as owners of the World Trade Center.

Old man Udane T. hates Charoen's guts but he must have been in a bad enough bind that he stooped to taking Charoen's money for the last of the liquor empire that Charoen has succesfully taken over (hostilly) from him.

The Techapaiboons were part of the Soi Rachakru Rat Pack, that is the Choonhavan family. Udane was an adopted son (informally) of Field Marshal Pin Choonhavan and that is how he came to control the liquor monopoly (at that time a Royal monopoly like tobacco.)  The general was of course Chatchai Choonhavan's father, and father in law to virtually everybody that was anybody during the 40s and 50s when he was power behind the scenes of Field Marshal Pibulsongkram (all of which ended in 58 when FM Sarit came to power by coup and tossed them all out.)

Some of this bad bunch are still in high positions:

The owners of the Bangkok Bank for one bunch
The Adireksarn family for another (police director generals)

I won't bother to gossip about their main revenue source or which US agency was their stalwart patron...including General Paow Srinand, "the worst Thai who ever lived" according to former PM, MR Kukrit Pramoj, speaking at Paow's funeral...

Kloster was/is brewed in Thailand (now called Classic K) and until recently was under license from the German (not Belgian) brewery, to the family described in my previous post.

Boon Rawd NEVER had the rights to Kloster and there was a BITTER rivalry between Boon Rawd and the Techapaiboons (who controlled the hard liquor business completely, and made their move into the beer business with Kloster in the late 80s.)

At that time Boon Rawd controlled about 97% pf the beer market, the sole rival was Amarit which did not have nationwide distribution. (Also it was the Techapaiboons.)

When those guys decided to go after the beer business more aggressively, with Kloster, Boon Rawd retaliated by buying up 100% of small green bottles in LOS for two years.

Kloster in 1989 and 1990 was thus only available in LARGE green bottles, which the bars did not want and did not buy.

Boon Rawd took the green bottles and crushed them and melted them and paved the road in front of their brewery with them, just to remind the Techpaiboons what 97% market share meant.

True story. I was HERE when this happened and I happen to personally know some of the peripheral Techapaiboon family members who told me how this went down.

Now of course former Techapaiboon lieutenant Charoen (gone independent) has taken over the hard liquor business quite thoroughly and is beating Boon Rawed VERY badly at their own game, the beer business. Meanwhile Boon Rawd is trying (but failing) to counterattack by a strategic alliance with Japan's Suntory, but so far Charoen's $$$ has kept the bureaucracy firmly in place and entrenched against any Japanese distillery on Thai soil -- even for export only.

(The Japanese use THAI STICKY RICE to make their whiskeys, the Japanese rice farmers are politically all powerful and make problems for Suntory about importing the glutinous rice from here, and so Suntory wants to ferment/distill here and ship the whiskeys back to Japan, which the rice farmers and their patrons at the Liberal Democrat Party care about not at all.
