I usually give it a wide berth !  
The nearest I ever get is Wetherspoons in Wardour Street or Mr Bongo's record shop. I prefer Gerrard Street which is named after a famous Liverpool Footballer !

Although they are the 'Macdonalds' of pubs they do vary.
I know of one where the beer is good and so is the food but 'Iceland' microwave is not my idea of eating.
The fact that Tim Martin drops in occasionally may help ?
Some of the clientele look like they are frequent travellers to LOS !

if you want to live here learning the language is required and you need to do so actively in a school. Unless you want to speak bar girl thai in which case everyone will know how you learned to speak.
The problem with the "real" Thai girl is that the ones who can keep you on your toes intellectually are generally speaking wealthy as all hell and not interested in us poor bastards. Income inequality is on such a magnitude in thailand that you usally encounter the extremes.

well the definition of a chav may well be put more eloquently by others rather than myself but for me it's the sort of language you might expect to hear from the burberry, argos gold chain and addidas white trainer wearing youth of today.
basically poorly educated slang
e.g.wayne rooney ( despite his prolific talent)
I wonder how many of the men that lose their hearts to bar girls would still feel the same way if they could really understand the girls language not only fluently but in the real context of it in their society.

Dear all, as a newcomer with three trips up this year and four trips planned for 2005 I can say that Thailand still has a great deal going for it. You can get jaded with any city anywhere.
Had one week early November - best I can recall in my 43 year history.
