I think it would be a bit more difficult to understand if Hugh was going to Phuket to party, dive, hit the beach, etc. Instead he is going with a friend, and he said he will not affect the area that was hit. Plus, his girlfriend will be able to make sure that they are not intruding in any situation that might occur, since she knows the language. I would caution anyone travelling to that area for specific health reasons listed above. I also hope that Phuket and Phi Phi can eventually get back to normal. Hopefully people will not think that an earthquake of this magnitude is a likley event. I understand they are talking about implementing some type of warning system, but I question how much a scuba diver, a fisherman or someone on a small island could have reacted to such a calamity with a short amount of alarm.

Quote: from nokna on 5:52 am on Dec. 28, 2004 well done Hugh. you and I are in a minority here,i would be there tomorrow if I could. Bangkoksexy. no Bangla Rd left?,where is your info from? there are many pics on the Internet and while it looks like carnage, most of the rubbish will have been cleared up. many Bars were open 12 Hours after the event after huge efforts from the staff to clean up. my friends Bar was damaged but still open on the same night. have to agree with Hugh's comments about a certain Nation West of the UK. after what happened in NYC many people were too scared to travel thinking they would be next. many Countries around the World lost Millions of $ because the greatest Nation in the World were too scared to travel....... flame away Guys,i love all the abuse.
Wow - your post shows alot of class taking a shot at Americans and (911) in the face of the calamity that occurred in Phuket/LOS. Scared - your kidding right? Many Americans didn't travel due to the plummeting markerts and the inavailabilty of disposable income. I could go on and on but rather not make u smaller than you already are - taking the high road here. I think the point some are trying to make is the next couple of weeks in Phuket may not be the best place to be considering so many other options in LOS. Many people will be mourning and trying to pull thier lives back together. I already have plans for Feb and will not change them because I agree Baht spent in Phuket will go a long way to help those who recieve it. I hope and pray that Phuket and other affected aera's get through this disaster quickly. Thai people are a tough group - my prayers are with them. CZ

According to Bangkoksexy: "There is no beach left there is no Bangla road left there is no fun at all in Phuket." What a load of shit. The beach is still there, there's just no chairs or umbrellas and a lot of debris on it which will all disappear very soon. Bangla Road is still there, it's just got some sand on it. It will be business as usual very soon. No fun at all in Phuket? Or did you mean "no fun at all in Patong"? The Thai people won't be sitting around moping and crying, they'll be picking up the pieces and getting back to normal ASAP. I hear reports about lack of sanitation and fresh drinking water. More horseshit. Phuket's fresh drinking water comes in bottles for f***-sake! Dead bodies on the beach? Just left there to rot for weeks? Are you serious? The only hotels and businesses affected were the ones closest to the beach. Most of them are FINE. Right now they need our support (i.e. money) and to help them get their lives back to normal. Staying away or going elsewhere will do more harm than good.

WOW this thread and discussion is going weird... A huge disaster just happened, something really exceptional, with thousand of victims... We are just and only 2 days after the disaster, and some stupid people are considering going to Phuket for holidays.... It is obvious that the global instructure heavily suffered and people are just starting to realize. WHAT'S THE HELL DO YOU WANT TO DO THERE ON NEW YEAR EVE ? Just give them time to clean, time to breath again. I believe it will take at least 1 month... There are so many other nice destinations in LOS, why this stupid discussion ?

my 2 cents & some information been watching the news, ITV seems to have the best coverage LIVE they are still collecting bodies near the ocean & there are 3 & 4 rows of cars driving down the main road which looks to be a 2 lane road The reporters keep advising repeatedly NOT to travel to Phuket (unless absolutely necessary) at this time as it will only cause more "kwahm woon wai" (confusion, disruption) They even stated that accidents were being caused by the onlookers who weren't paying attention to their following distance & bumped into the vehicle in front of them most of the vehicles I'm seeing now are emergency vehicles & there are helicopters also AIS, ITV, DHL, & some other companies have a joint venture that has already sent 3 plane loads of food, drinking water, juices, & sanitary napkins,, sleeping gear, etc. to Phuket Nurses & Doctors from Pitsanuloke, Surat Thani, Haht Yai & Krajuap Birikahn have been dispatched to help USA has donated 15 million USD, but not sure if that's specific to LOS or the entire disaster Australia donated 7.7 million USD Kon Kaan has donated coffins ITV are announcing that they are taking donations at : Siam Commercial Bank, Ratchayothin branch Account # 111-3-05388-3 Care of : ITV for Victims there are some vehicles there that look like they were run thru a crusher & what looks like a Navy or Coast Guard boat that is grounded amongst some trees that is almost a kilo from the ocean

HJ: You guys that are intent on going back regardless of the situation there are nuts. Those hotels that are even open and still standing will be filled with Red Cross/UN and other workers that are there to help the recovery. I will be surprised if they even allow you to get on the flight to Phuket, unless you are working for a relief organization. Don't take up the space when it is needed by somebody doing some real good. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- As Calzoid put it, Nokna. That was a cheap shot. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- prsit: I suggest you rethink your post and add an apology for your lack of thought in it.

Take at least three homeless people in your room and get a 50% discount.

Having lived on Phuket, in Patong, for over 9 years and still participating in business there I feel that this discussion is not real necessary. (btw, now live in Bangkok) I have spoken many friends who are engaged in businesses in Patong, Kamala and Kata. The tourist infrastructure is at present in bits and pieces. (Eventhough some operators are making the best of it and try to generate some Baht, mainly to cover their own costs) Affected areas of Phuket are declared a disaster area. They do not need more tourists to take care off!! My advise, reflecting the opinion of many residents of Phuket, is to stay away. Let the basic things come back to normal. Repatriate those who want to leave, care for the injured and let people mourn over their lost ones. This needs some time, how long? Nobody knows yet. Eventhough I would love to see the tourists returning sooner than later, the basics need to be there. Let it settle down and follow the advise of international organisations and governments. I wish all affected in Phuket all the best!!

Expatchuck said: "Those hotels that are even open and still standing will be filled with Red Cross/UN and other workers that are there to help the recovery." I live in Phuket and most (i.e. nearly ALL) of the hotels are standing and operating as normal. Many guests have decided to leave but some are still keen to continue with their holidays as normal. To suggest that the whole area is a disaster zone is more muck-raking from people with "knowledgable ignorance" of the facts. I seriously doubt that the UN would be called in to assist and to suggest that thousands of them will be brought to the island and fill up the hotels is pure poppycock.
