The formula that works for me is to take the Western income, quadruple it to establish the equivalent in Thailand.
So a $ 5000 per month income gives you a lifestyle equivalent to $ 20,000 per month in the West.

Interesting seeing all the formulas. I have a collegue who I found out has the same plan to move to LOS. We both arrived at a similar figure that we felt we would need/like to earn there. That was $8,500 USD/Month.
The thing here for both of us is needing or trying to keep a western wage in LOS really put it in perspective. What could we do to earn that sort of income in Thailand? Trying to make that work really gets you hustling, at least for me anyway. I assumed that I'd need a fairly passive income source since I am 41 and speak only the worst broken Thai that I certainly wasn't going to ge a local job with that sort of wage. 
She felt the same way. She has better higher level connections in Thai society than I do as well. She has technical and business connections. My social network there currently is limited to rice farmers (surprising eh) So my task looks a little harder. Despite that I have been working on that and things are looking possible. I have been buying rental property in the US and hope to pull it all togther in another 2-3 years. Who knows I hope I make it. If I don't I'll still be closer than I was before I started. Anyway at the 3 year mark I hope to be in the place where I have met my inflation adjusted marks and can decide on whether or not to keep my regular job in the corporate world.
I do really love Thailand and I really want to make this work. I will say trying to pulll it together for an eventual move has taken a lot of energy but I am hoping it will all prove worth it. If nothing else this motivation has helped my life here I believe. I know I may sound like a complete and utter nut but like I said striving to make a good go of it there is helping me here. I had lost everthing financially before and my first trip to LOS really made me feel like I was alive again and gave me something I felt was worth working for. It helped me dig out and get back in the game.

i have been a lucky bastard and am going to inherate enough to move to LOS in a couple years but not sure if I could give up work at about 45..I spent 2 months in Isaan with my ex wife years ago and was bored to death, is opening a bar the only way to go in Pattaya of are there any other things to consider
