Snpark's response explains exactly why cheating and overcharging farangs is so common in Thailand. Sheer ignorance if you ask me
on the contratry, I have never been cheated in thailand - maybe because I come across as some one to the thais that doesnt "deserve" to be cheated, I dont know
but some of the posters on here do surprise me
you are happy to take advantage of living in such a cheap country and live like a big time charlie but not prepared to spread the wealth or tip or anything
its nothing to do with how much money you have or dont have, you dont even have to think of it in baht or $ or percentage, but as a westerner to pay 60baht for a haircut, which you obviously think was good because you paid, but then not to leave a tip seems terrible to me
i mean what harm would it do to you to give him an extra 20baht and a smile and a thankyou
then maybe next time when you go back he will be pleased to see you, only charge you 60baht and give you a free pepsi too
now he just thinks you are a cheaparse and probably wouldnt let you in his shop!

Yeah, but there's probably 100 of Thais, for every one of you, that go into those parks. I don't see a majority of farangs in the places I go to...
So, the argument still stands.
Should rich Thais pay more? They do, as they pay significantly more taxes with their income bracket - that argument works just like argument that SoCal residents pay more taxes to the government, thus they somehow get a cheaper admission since the government pays Disneyland back? (at least according to your implication)
As for you being like a Rich Thai, except you get to pay more - well, them's the breaks. You knew that when you signed up, didn't you? Otherwise, have your girl purchase the tickets, at the Thai price (just like a SoCal resident can prepurchase tickets, and bring along non SoCal residents), or just grin an bear it.

He wasn't arguing over the tip, the issues was that the Thai barber assumed he could charge the farang more - if he had asked for 60 Baht, as advertised, I'm sure DrLove would have tipped him 10 or 20 Baht.
In comparison, I doubt any of his Thai customers would give him a tip, at all. So, in that respect, DrLove did behave exactly like a Thai customer.

When did tipping for a hair-cut become mandatory?
No disrespect but by chance would you be from the US snpark?
There are many parts of the world were tipping for various services is not part of what is 'normal' or 'standard' proceedure. And the concept that a certain amount should automatically be tipped for this service or that is one of the things I hate the most about any trip I take to the US.
The nastiness of expecting a tip is spreading here in LOS and in some places it just ridiculous. I mean how many places like Starbucks or Baskin Robbins now have tip cups sitting on the counter? Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. I mean WTF did the lady/lad behind the counter at Baskin Robbins do that possibly merits a tip?
IMHO a tip should be give for service above and beyond, not for sub-par service, certainly not for anyone who sticks there hand out (either literally or figuratively) expecting to get a tip - regardless of how good the service was.
I typically do tip when I get a haircut in LOS, but I don't begrudge anyone who does not.
