You never know. I read in the Bangkok Post last week that Thailand will send some army engineers to Iraq to assist in the reconstruction. A Muslim leader in Southern Thailand expressed his great displeasure about that and hinted that it might lead to terrorist acts in Thailand.

Typical. Well, we know who the Thai cops will be watching, when the time comes. Honestly, I think regardless of APEC, it is only a matter of time until the turbaned morons will successfully pull off a terrorist strike in Thailand. Nobody expected Bali, either - and at this point they are shifting from their version of strategic targets, to mainly civilian targets in efforts to hit westerners.

To be frank, if that's the goal, place notorious for attracting 'special' tourists would be the prime target (confirmed by the maps found with the southern Thailand islamic group), as it would have a significant impact, and it would severely strike the tourism industry. If you thought SARS was bad for the industry, just wait what happens in the aftermath of one bomb!

Of course, it also would mean the prices would rop, again

What the hell man? If you are that worried about it, STAY HOME!

They are going to strike whether we take precautions or not. They want us to be scared. Don't give them the satisfaction.

Tell you what, Harry, I'll have a word with little Noi and she can put 'my friend' on the job.

Believe me, nobody and nothing sneaks into NEP without my friend knowing all about it. Probably the most formidable intelligence operation the world has ever known. Ý

Oh, that I can believe.
The BG grapevine can put most intelligence networks to shame.

Avoiding "likely places" is only a small step you can take without any guarantee of success. Let's say you avoid NEP. You would also have to avoid walking thro Suk, Patpong, Grace, Cowboy, Siam, and so on. Also while you are at it, why not maximise your chances of survival by avoiding Phuket and Pattaya as well. Surely, security here can't be better than in Bkk! And, remember, home is even as dangerous if not more. Staying at home doesn't significantly reduce your chances of avoiding a bomb - because you don't KNOW what is the next target. No place is safe. No point running scared either. This is global.

This isn't an issue of running scared, but rather I'm interesting in reducing risk as much as I find it possible, by evaluating the situation.

The fact that there *IS* a risk, is self-evident not just by media-hype (which I ignore), but by situations like these:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/specials/troubledsouth/index.php

Which indicate that various islamic groups are also attracted to the APEC summit, and were looking to sow terror for their own agendas - predictably. Granted, the arrest of the southern group, and Mabali probably curbed that effort somewhat - but if we are dealing with Al Quaeda backed goons, we are looking at least at 2-3 fall-back plans.

Hype such as this:

Doesn't help the situation, as I feel this kind of stuff does more to give those folks ideas, then to provide us with warnings ("Don Muang, Ali, of course. Why didn't we think of that..! Quick, grab the missile...")

Obviously, my hypothesis are arbitrary, and my concerns peripheral - as I certainly won't let them detract me from my intention to fly to Thailand in October and spend 10 days there.

The way I look at it right now, I'll most likely start my trip in Udon Thani for 5 days, and then return to BKK after the 22nd. It'd be interesting to see how tthe barscene will be, recovering from the additional holidays, and the expected lull in activity and business.
