Culture Ministry casts a wider net
The Culture Ministry is attempting to expand censorship from pornographic video discs to sexually provocative websites and the print media.
Assets seizure would be among its tools.
Veerasak Kowsurat, assistant to the culture minister, said staff would tomorrow discuss possible action with people from the Social Development and Human Security Ministry and the Information and Communications Technology Ministry, as well as internet service providers. They would look for ways to block access to as many as 700,000 pornographic websites, to stop young people from becoming obsessed with sex and committing sex crimes.

Ministry to recruit informers to spy on porn

Thousands of informers will be assigned to report on pornographic websites and producers, copiers and sellers of sex videos.
The move was agreed at a meeting yesterday of officials from the Culture Ministry, Social Development and Human Security Ministry and the Information and Communication Technology Ministry.
The watchdogs will be recruited from within the Social Development and Human Security Ministry and members of provincial and district culture councils.
Veerasak Kowsurat, assistant to the culture minister, said they would look for illegal websites, foreign porn films copied and distributed by Thai people and locally produced pornography.
''We're very worried about the local porn films produced and cast by Thai people, as this can cause young viewers to feel that illicit sex is something close to them and normal in society,'' he said.
People with knowledge of such pornographic activities should inform the ministry or police so action could be taken.
Reports about pornography or gambling could also be reported to the ICT Ministry's website.
Internet service providers would be asked to close access to such websites.
