You claim it was an off the cuff remark and sure all of us have said things we regret but where were your brains that day?In your feet?

I would venture to say there is none among us more adept than I at opening foot inserting mouth. Examples which I have had to face in my own shit-for-brains-moments have tested my abilities at self forgiveness like you cannot imagine. That being said, I know too that I have often gotten there just because I balked and tried too hard to lighten up that instantaneously 'serious' moment before me.

Nokna has heart. Nokna has big heart. Noknas actions today, his continued caring, his still engaged friendship have more (vastly more) than made up for the tears that flowed in that instance. Certainly she has forgiven him, and he is far wiser from the lesson learned on that day. His candor I respect greatly as well. Me thinks he deserves forgiveness in this present day.

And what of me? In nearly a week I shall be strolling Sukhumvit navigating the mothers with child on sidewalk. In BKK is that child a pawn of a horrid cartel? Would my satangs be better used when sent to an orphanage? Either way the child is still there and my heart will still go out to it. But I am loathe to create teh opportunity for more children when I return. So what? ĘShould I just steel my heart and pass by as Mr. Cratchett? Or will a 10baht coin per cup be the right thing to do?

I'm sure it will not surprise you guys to hear that I have a very clinical and detached view of beggars. IMO, they do provide a service, which is to make other people feel good (like Skip and X) for only a modest fee. Unfortunately I think they also make many other people feel bad about the world in general and/or make others more cynical. They also serve as a reminder that there are many less fortunate people than ourselves.

However, I never, ever, ever give money to beggars and I've had this policy since I was teenager. This is especially true in a place like Thailand. My first thought is that it is not my place to care for the poor in Thailand. Rich Thais, middle-class Thais, even lower class Thais should take care of the less fortunate in their own society. That is their responsibility and they know far better than I who is deserving and how to best improve their own society. The only charity I would give (in Thailand) or my own country is for things that I personally think improve the world. Feeding people is very low on that list. Improving education (especially for women and anything that increases the chance for people to improve their own quality of life), organizations such as planned parenthood, I also give to museums and zoos.... But simply giving food to people just causes more people in dire straights, IMO (this is my 'pigeon theory').

I support the Thai economy by buying things and using services that I enjoy. If a bargirl wants to give 1% of the 2000 baht I gave her to a flower girl that is up to her and she would know better than I who deserves it. I will give a nice smile and maybe a sawasdee to the beggars, but that's it.

If anyone feels like giving money, send it to me, I will gladly receive, so that you will feel better. After all the act of receiving is actually "giving" the other person the "pleasure of giving".

At least we know with you the money wouldn't be wasted.

The problem is the man with no arms crawling in patpong, the girl playing music outside the steps of pantip, the mother and child near world trader. They all work for the same persons or almost. At 19.00 a clock they come and pick them up and drive them home. There are many many real groups that use the money better. For one the red cross. Or give it some charity you can find on sundays in the outlook section they also have a link for more people that are for real. And if you still have more give them to me I buy food for the stray dogs.
