i know someone who,s 68 and he lives 6 months in the uk and 6 months in the los,, he leaves here just as winter starts in october..i learnt to speak thai by first buying a language course""linguaphone"" studying for about a year then I went to live with my ex bg wife in her parents house in 1990 for 6 months...it was very hard at first with people laughing at the way I spoke,,since wife went back in 98 have,nt spoke a single word of thai to anybody in uk,, think if and when I go back next year my thai will be abit rusty can,t wait to find out

For those who are confused about America, please understand that corporate america and religious america have joined forces and are busy spreading wealth and ignorance in rather unequal proportions upon the populace.
Our news media doesn't just break the news, they make the news. When Janet Jackson can create almost as much controversy as any run of the mill terrorist just by showing a bit of her breast to a few million unsuspecting conservatives, well then you know the end is near.
At least, that's the way I see it.

Why does the earlier poster say Thailand is hard to make money in? I have 5 (small) businesses in Thailand now - all profitable.
I guess it all depends what you consider "enough" as it is probably relative. In my case they make NPs of around 180,000 a month which (I believe) is around $5,000 and is plenty for me. At first it was a lot of effort but now I have 2 managers and just oversee. On top of this I give good jobs to 14 people.
Secret is the same as buying ANY business ANYWHERE -
1. Buy one with "potential" not one already maxed on profit (ignore those making great money as the only way is probably down).
2. Make sure your market is expansive - sell to the world not just locally.
3. AVOID bars - hahahahahah.
With regard to the last point I meant to buy, though avoiding them full stop would probably be better advice.

White Spider interesting comment how do you run business in thailand and retain control when u only have 49% ownership. Its always been a big problem for me I worked in tourism in thailand for many years and had many oportunities to own my own business. For all my aquaintances (over 30) who did go ahead and poor money into there own business, they have all without exception been forced out by there Thai partners and usually at a loss. Im in a different situation now have returned to Oz and work in a family busines. Now all I have to put up with is the bloody goverment lol. But at least I can communicate my displeasure when needed and not have to put up with the 3 teared price system in Thailand. I can also buy goods at trade discount which I couldnt in Thailand, and I dont get threatened, like : it is easy to die in thailand when I complain about quality and price of goods brought in thai. I miss Thailand a lot but when on returning I see the live for today attitude dont worry about tomorrow I feel sad and wonder how many times I will return. Please excuse if this is to long winded, Thailand was very good for me while I lived there but maybe the star is waning. Wishing u all a great New Year.

I have noticed a big difference between New Yorkers,Californians and some Floridians to the rest of the Central massive Bible bashing holier than thou, might is right and general bone headed and culturally bankrupt Confederate/Yankees.
Having a chat with one American in LOS I said,"Why do you live here mate ?" To which he replied,"I don't want to live in Police State America!" - After a few 'experiences' with those nice young men from immigration I can see what he means !

You need to use preference and voting shares. Basically you just get a good lawyer I can reccommend one if you pm me.
In simple terms you "own" 49% of the company but 99% of the voting and resale rights. 51% od "shares" does NOT have to mean they own 51% of the value of the company.
If the "partner" kicks up a stink you just vote to close the business down - they probably wont want that.
As I said that is a VERY simplistic view but the lawyers can sort it out for you.

I might be that earlier poster... well,180K/mth is the kindda of money I was regulary making while living in Thailand ( while working irregulary). Not enough.
Definetely not the same as everywhere, it seems easier everywhere when U're local.I was self employed overseas for abt 10 y and I still have a hard time to believe how much easier it's been to make money back in my homecountry. Thanks to french protectionism and racism but those concepts seem to be widely shared around the globe, and are definetely obvious in Thailand. The fact that in Thailand it's very hard to grasp the language, especially written, just makes it more difficult.
All this said, Thailand definetely has a big potential in some areas and I might as well set up a company there in a little while
