I wouldn't call these jobs, that your government is trying to fill in with skilled professionals (which Australia is desperately short of), in the "lower skilled bracket". Sometimes it's a case of living inside but being and outsider (I hope you can grasp the irony for a change......  )
Last time it was counted there were 193 countries so I suppose that in term of population, being 53rd (and I'm taking your stats at face value) isn't saying that much. Same with the GDP table but thats mainly thanks to auntie Blighty and other European countries connections (and now ever increasingly China), which you seem to love so much (not). 
Australia is 45th in world unemployment rate at 5.10% of their workforce, just slightly above those towering economies of Burma & Mali. But I guess now, with this massive influx of 20,000 plus Poms & Euros coming over soon, your table standing will improve..... and you never know, you may pick up a few good habits too.

bangers is no place to raise a child when you compare it to home..
sure some of the richer folks with international schools etc.. might stay here.. but the majority of expats who come here.. will leave within 10 years if they can get work back home.. family comes first!
unless you making some real coin in bangers, international schools, and such can be expensive.
still there will be many that stay, and many will leave and leave thailand for holidays

I notice this 'Duck' always leaps in with a few snidey comments yet does not have the where-with-all to start a thread of his own ? Is he called 'Duck' because the way he waddles due to his excess beer gut ? Another sad old man retired to Thailand?
Thailand will only change when the fat old sex tourists stop retiring there and the Thais except more educated professionals in business and other fields. To compete in the Global market they will have to change. They will also need to improve the general education system to something akin to Western or Japanese lines. I doubt whether the 'Old Guard' (Corrupt Police, Army 'Generals' and politicians etc) will except this as it may change the social pecking order. They like the status-quo but the country will not compete Internationally.

It would appear Thailand would wish to raise their educational standards above yours, at the very least.

wow! are we supposed to be impressed by this towering achievement? Australia has a strong centralised government that redefine the word Big Brother amongst democratic societies. High taxation, crippling welfare system and red tape regulations, ludicrous political correctness, the list is endless.
I'm not mentioning my pet hate subject of the place: the 2 legged mammals that forms roughly 50% of the population (and no, I'm not talking about men).
Mel worry not, future is bright for Australia; with the continuing influx of skilled labourers from Europe and the massive yellow invasion from neighbouring countries. Australia will emerge stronger a better, the flip side of the coin is that you guys will be reduced to a small ethnic minority, playing the folkloristic and colourful part as seen in most TV commercials in UK and other European countries.

It is just this generation of bitches, previously Australian women where known for their humour and good heartedness,, what happened ??? Yes Political correctness gone mad,, bra burning lesbians running a large part of the legal system ( and polotics).
Never mind,, we will breed them out,,LOL.
Sydney for Campari,, ok,,, I work 6 days a week to pay for the dole-bludgers BUT should be able to wing a day off sometime soon.
December in LOS,,, I arrive December 26,, anytime after that fine .
Have fun and use Australia as it should be,, comfortable place to live and earn enough to have fun in THAILAND with your 4 or 5 weeks holidays every year.

Don’t get me started on this subject………I already made my feelings known on a different thread. The funny thing is that Aussie women are quite well regarded in Blighty among the male populace, maybe coz they keep a low profile and tend to be reserved and friendly. A stark contrast to what you actually get down under!
I arrive 17 December and travel to Pattaya on a 26th, then in early January I hop on in an international flight and head off to Philippines, for 2 weeks. The place is brimming with Aussies (at certain times, AC is overrun by the Newcastle mob) but it’s a fun place to be and pub crawling takes a new height with these lads. Then I return to BKK again for the final week.
