It seems pretty straight forward to me.
If she wants to work, file form I-765 and see if they approve it.
All of this applies to legal immigrants only. Illegal immigrants can work wherever they want (until they are caught).

I had a job lined up for my wife before she arrived in the country. This information is correct: As a K-1 visa holder you may file Form I-765 Application for Employment Authorization. But the fact remains a K-1 Visa holder is allowed to apply for a Social Security card at the local Social Security Administration Office. She got her Social Security number/card in very short period of time. The employer only needs a Social Security number. She applied for the Employment Authorization and started working before the issuance of the card. The appointment for the Employment Authorization Card is just taking photos and signing the card.

Thai country girls dump their foreign husbands
Bangkok - Thai girls in the middle of rural north-east Thailand are dumping their foreign husbands by the score, a senior judge said Saturday.
Of the 142 divorce cases filed in Khon Kaen Civil Court in the last three months most involved local girls seeking to split from their foreign spouses, Patikorn Khonpipat, chief justice of the Juvenile and Family Court said.
The judge could give no reason for the recent turning away from foreign husbands who have been sought after by women from this relatively deprived region for the last several decades.
He speculated that Thai girls had unreasonable expectations of a superior lifestyle and high incomes when they married foreign men - only to become sharply disillusioned quite quickly. Few Thais nowadays live in abject poverty.
There are no reliable statistics for the number of Thai women marrying foreigners with many marriages not registered in Thailand, but it seems likely to be quite high. Many of the single men who visit Thailand's notoriously raunchy nightlife zones come away with a girl in tow.
More respectable women are finding it easy to link up with lonely foreigners thanks to a plenitude of internet dating sites where girls who can hardly speak English can connect with men hoping to find an "exotic" Thai partner.
In Roi Et province, next to Khon Kaen, there is a "Swiss Village" so called because more than 100 women there have married foreign men, with already married girls introducing others.
A couple of years ago the National Economic and Social Development Board discovered that 15,284 women in the sprawling north-eastern region were married to foreigners and live overseas, which prompted the economic think tank to promote the idea that foreign-married girls could help channel investment back to Thailand.
The latest news suggests either that many country girls think they have already received sufficient investment or are no longer prepared to pay the price of an unsatisfactory marriage.

"VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION".
I suspect your wife's employer did not see her S.S. card or she would legally not be allowed to work without Employment Authorization. The Social Security and IRS system in the U.S. collect taxes and Social Security contributions from illegals all the time as the ability to pay taxes unfortunately rates higher than whether you are allowed to work or not. I would be worried that if caught it would be a "violation" of her K-1 visa and she could be deported.

Love ya brother but this is simply NOT true. You are correct that you can file for a Social Security Number and heck maybe even an employer will hire you but you are not "legally" allowed to work until you have that authorization. It even says that on your Social Security Card that employment is strictly with DHS approval. Now I can't say every employer will be strict along these guidelines but the law says she should not be allowed to work without that EAD card. A S.S.N. is not enough.
Also:
* Depending on which U.S. airport you fly into (NY JFK) some will issue a temporary 90 day work authorization if asked for.

did some fact checking and those airports including JFK (which mrs atl flew into) didnt offer it as of 2005 upon almost every entry..which as you say they did offer on a temporary basis prior..my contact was not aware of the sudden change in 2005 when mrs atl arrived and was not automatically given a temp work stamp...
I think most employers especially thai's see a thai girl being married to farang as on the up and up and will overlook it....but that ( as of 2005) is not really legal as you so ademantaly (sp?) point out..

Maybe a nice job in fast food is in order. I understand the rules do not change as quickly. Also note that the stamp was not automatically given....you had to "ask" for the work stamp when entering JFK. It was all over VisaJourney that you could only do this at JFK and you had to ask for it.

Not trying to promote the legal profession, but I would spend a few dollars and get crystal clear advice on all of this as well as get the prenuptial written and signed. All rules change for the new "missus" once they land in good ole 'merica. Words like Palimony scare the b'jesus outa me!!!

Just two more weeks before my TGF sets foot in Amerika for the first time. She is busy running around BKK shopping for winter clothes (lot of snow here) and a large suitcase. The excitement is palpable and, frankly, I'm looking forward to a little Thai nookie myself.
Marooned in Farangland at a decent paying job ain't all bad, but I suspect having the missus here will make things quite a bit more interesting, to say the least. Am looking forward to her signature crab curry dish and a bit of som tom.
Will share some of the goings on in this thread once she gets here, sure to be some funny moments as she deals with farangs (and me) in their native element.

Excellent fun and games for the first 6-12 months,,,,,,she is amazed you are willing to help with the cooking ( how you know how to do daag-ling?), clean the dishes (ohhh daag-ling Thai men not do that),,etc,etc,etc,,,THEN after time things change,,,,suddenly it's NORMAL,in fact mandatory, for the man to cook and clean the dishes,,,,THEN, she will find another Asian gal to compare her situation with,,,,"you know honey,I good girl good education,but Mark's wife she was hooker and low family but she drive BMW and have the big beautiful house.
It's about here you better make the dream, slowly becoming a nightmare, snap back to reality.
