...The term you use does not actually exist as a word...
ouch, that was 'painful' (but funny)

Thanks, duly noted, and corrected.

Now listen DerekBanana (now that was funny!), how dare you to insult one of our finest linguists?

Just because it isn't it in the dictionary, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The dictionary is just slow to pick it up.

You might 'Google' planeful and you will see how many people use it.... without being penalized.

If you don't stop harassing Daffy, I'll ask BigDUSA to come see you. And with his wipes and love of the FBB. he'll torture you to pieces.

BTW I am not a native speaker. Any errors will be automatically forgiven.

I'd split hairs but since I am bald they are like hen's teeth!

Mr. Alan, according to the US embassy, only visitors are allowed to bring one counterfeit article, not US citizens and if it is deemed these will be sold, they too will be confiscated.

As I like to repeat myself, buy the original and no one has to cut and paste from Dictionary.com.

You know, CI, for someone who so desperately wants to be right, it is amazing how often you end up being just plain wrong (see Mr Alan's list of how much, above).

Furthermore, the link you provided:

http://www.stop-piracy.ch/en/candp/cap60.shtm

Has nothing to do with the initial argument regarding being allowed to bring a single item to the country (Switzerland, in this case). It's not just enough to post links, they actually have to support what you say.

Mr Alan is quite correct in his explanations. You, on the other hand, really need to get your facts straight, it seems.

That is CS to you Duck. At least Mr. Banana (I mean Bahama) corrects his mistakes.

As for the link, I guess you did not read it thoroughly just as you never read other peoples posts throughly (and do not deny this as you as much as admitted to it on the 'Z').

If you read though the FAQs and links it does say that to bring in counterfit items is against the law and whilst there is no direct enforcement rules; if one brings only one item for personal use the actual enforcement is up to the inspecting customs officer and depends on what is brought in, quantity, and the circumstances around the inspection.

I suspect that if you brought in one pair of trainers, the Swiss will let you by; but if you had several types of counterfeit/copy items you would find that they may be confiscated.

Do yourself a favor Duck and read the entire post including links, you are embarrassing yourself.

BTW the point of the post is that it is wrong to support pirated products and those people who take advantage of the expediency requirements of the Customs Services around the world are still wrong and are parties to a crime...

Unethical behavior, perhaps. But not a crime if one complies with the laws.

...and the rules seem to make it quite clear that one item per person is allowed, for all the reasons we debated. Hence, if it is allowed, why not bring it.

I do agree with the staement, though, that buying counterfeit merchandise and passing it off as 'real' to friends, and family when you gift them, is just plain dumb and dishonest. Personally, I love purchasing counterfeit watches, simply because I can, and because the haggling is fun, and seeing what the market has to offer.

Here is the customs directive that might help clear up this thread a bit.

While Mr. Alan is correct that the main issue seems to be related to if the fake is in violation of a copyright or a trademark. His logic behind the stricter enforcement of the copyright over the trademark is a bit flawed.

Quote: from Mr Alan on 7:08 am on Sep. 1, 2007

No, it has nothing to do with that.

When you buy a counterfeit Rolex watch, it only looks like a Rolex and is not of the same quality as a Rolex. The counterfeiters are not using the engineering, the same parts, or the same workmanship when the fake watch is made. So the purchaser has not really got something for nothing (except that they can fool their friends). They got a shitty watch that didn’t cost much.

A pirated CD or DVD is usually an exact copy of the copyrighted original. Software that comes on a pirated CD does not run any slower or any differently than the original (assuming you get past the registration key). In addition, once pirated digital media comes into the US, it can be copied many additional times for resale. A fake Rolex brought back from overseas can only be sold once (legally it can only be sold after one year).

Copyrighted products also include – toys, stuffed animals, clothing (such as those with cartoon characters), and other items that do not easily fall into the “because it is an exact copy” category. For example the famous Disney character – Donald Duck. Copyrights cover not only exact duplicates of Mr. Duck related items but derivative works as well. So exact duplication is not the issue and I am sure that we have all run into pirated DVD’s or CD’s that were not of the same quality as the real thing. Rarely have I come across a pirated DVD that could pass as an exact copy of the real thing – the quality can vary quite significantly and they do appear differently on my telly.

Plenty of pirated Disney stuff floating around out there that is far from an exact copy but still violate the copyright. Plenty of pirated Pixar related toys (Nemo, Woody, etc) that are not exact copies yet would still violate the copyright. Exact copy or not for some reason the US has decided to hold copyrights to a higher standard than trademarks.
