LEFT HAND meet RIGHT HAND.... Uh, where's the RIGHT HAND? Must be the INVISIBLE HAND.... Thaksin's passport at risk once again http://www.bangkokpost.com Vientiane (TNA) - For the second time since the 2006 military coup, the foreign ministry may lift the diplomatic passport of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra - now a wanted man after he fled to London on Sunday. Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag, speaking to the media during an official visit to Laos on Tuesday, said the ministry could take away Mr Thaksin's complimentary diplomatic passport, because the Supreme Court has issued arrest warrants for him and his wife Potjaman. The couple failed to appear at a court hearing in regard to a land purchase case in Bangkok on Monday. Mr Tej told journalists that the Supreme Court which issued the arrest warrants for the couple on Monday must first officially inform the ministry. The ministry of foreign affairs has not received information regarding the matter from the court or the prosecutor, he said, adding that ministry officials would need also to review regulations regarding the revocation of diplomatic passports. The study will be conducted as soon as possible in order to ensure that it does not violate Thai law and the ministry's regulations, Mr Tej said. Mr Thaksin had his diplomatic passport returned to him by former foreign minister Noppadon Pattama who had previously been the ousted premier's legal adviser. Mr Tej said he would rather not say that an "obstacle" existed, but ministry officials would need to enquire with the Thai embassy in London, as well as the Home and Foreign offices of the British government as to whether there is a possibility of extraditing the couple to Thailand. --------- In other words - nothing is going to happen and Thaksin's diplomatic passport is safe.

I can understand that Thaksin may be guilty of corruption, abuse of power, etc, etc, etc. My question is how much of this is what the Chinese call 'Green Eyes'. It seems to me that the behavior of the merchant class and royals has not been much different than that of Thaksin up to and including the fact that he did not 'spread the wealth around' but used it to buy supporters. In fact the only difference I see is that the 'supporters' getting bought are not of the traditional ruling classes but are made of commoners. In the Philippines it is said that Marcos' biggest mistake was that he did not 'spread the wealth' far enough. It is believed that if all 8 of the ruling families and the Catholic Church got their shares, the People Power Revolution may have never got off the ground. I suspect that Thaksin made the same error... EDIT IN: See how nice it is iDuck if everyone can read each others posts and discuss points civilly...

Criminal Court on track for a second arrest warrant for Pojaman The Criminal Court is scheduled today to convene a hearing which could lead to the issuing of a summons for Pojaman to report herself and confirm her whereabouts relating to the tax evasion case, court clerk Narat Imsuksri said on Wednesday. The judge in charge of the case will take the judicial steps in reaction to news reports that Pojaman has fled to England and failed to report to the Supreme Court for a separate litigation on the Ratchapisek land case, Narat said. Man City: Thaksin will be with team for 10 years Web http://www.bangkokpost.com The press in Britain reported on Wednesday (Thailand time) that Manchester City Football Club officials insist that the controversy surrouding Thaksin Shinawatra will not create instability at the club. Newspapers and agencies quoted executive chairman Garry Cook as saying, "City's future is not in jeopardy." Cook reportedly told the Manchester Evening News that, "In the short term, it is business as usual. We don't rely on Dr Thaksin's money. "When (coach) Mark Hughes makes a decision we go through the normal process, which can include banks, finance, or a whole bunch of different things just like any other club." Hughes, meanwhile, is "desperate" for Mr Thaksin to buy him a new striker, the Guardian reported. "Hughes is desperate for a new striker for Sunday's Premier League opener at Aston Villa - with Blackburn Rovers' 15-million-pound-rated Roque Santa Cruz his favoured choice," the paper claimed. Cook said the former Thai Prime Minister was looking at the club with a long-term view. "He is willing to look at whatever it takes to make City a great football club," said Cook. "This is a guy who loves City." Cook, appointed by Thaksin to promote City as a global brand, insisted the former Thai prime minister remained committed to his "10-year vision" for the club and denied reports that the owner arranged an emergency 2-million-pound loan from the former chairman John Wardle last season. Cook spent time with Thaksin in Beijing before he returned to England. "I gave him an update on the club and we talked about new player acquisitions," said Cook. "We also talked over dinner about why he had bought the club and his intentions. "It was really clear he wants to be at this football club for the next 10 years. He wants to build a dynasty and he was disappointed that people think he wanted to get in and back out." Mr Thaksin, the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Thai authorities on Monday, may face a second test of his "fit and proper person" status by the Premier League. The diplomatic passport thing does not make any sense. It is just a passport (not diplomatic). One thing is someone having a passport that says "diplomatic" (like all diplomatic passports do), and another one is that passport given its bearer the benefits an accredited diplomat gets. For instance, a diplomat from Russia may have diplomatic status in the USA (as a duly accredited official of the Russian mission to the USA) and travel with a diplomatic passport. But for all purposes when in transit through another country, legally that passport is like any regular passport from the same country. Ok, it says that you are an official of said country, but that is all. For all practical legal purposes it is just another passport. The only real "global" diplomatic passports are those issued by the UN (and the like)... when traveling with such passport the person moves around as an official of the UN, and not as from the country where he/she is from, and as such is granted diplomatic status everywhere.

Think : "Thailand" I think it's more a loss of face, or gain thereof, giving it back to him. Plus, obvious benefits arise - he gets to use the diplomat line at the customs checkpoints, and probably gets to use some VIP lounges. There may be other benefits, but my guess is, it's mostly 'face'

Jealous. A saying that comes from Hokkien. As there was a lot of transfer of words and saying between the British/Americans and the Hokkien during the 19th Century I suspect this is a Chinese view of the saying 'green with envy'...

ditto...I was curious as well... CS, would it apply when mrs atl and I are watching "Dateline NBC" and she makes a jealous comment about the host Ann Curry not being pretty? As she knows I think Ann is hot http://smartlemming.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/ann-curry.jpg or is it directed more towards jealousy of power/status, as in your point regarding Thaksin? "Green Eyes" thats a good one for the ole' repertoire! atl
