While in Bang Saen for dinner last weekend, I got a great tasting beer that the owner said was from Holland. I can't remember the name, but it had a funny lever activated top to open and close it. It was a bit pricey, and a little on the weak side (coming from a Chang drinker). But, it had good taste. Probably the best tasting beer I have had in LOS.

Grolsch in Bang Saen? ÝWhat a pleasant surprise! @Bigin: my point was whether there's room in the fridge, not room in the room. ÝCold beer should stay cold.

The superior rooms had bigger than standard room fridge, so the sueites should even be bigger than that. I hope anyway, but I'll think of 60 or 70 bags of ice in the bath tub should do the trick...

I finally visited the place that sells Belgian beers on Soi Sarasin (http://www.belgian-beers.itgo.com/home.htm). It's a very large second floor showroom, right now with minimum decoration and plenty of Belgian beer packs all over the room. There are also a few tables available for those who can't wait to get back home to drink their beers... It seems there is a plan to transform the place in a full bar/restaurant at some stage. The selection is quite large, with currently one trappist (Orval), several abbayes (Maredsous among others), Saint-Louis gueuze and kriek, several blanches/white beers (Namur,...), some specials (Duvel, Rodenbach,...). All over about 50 types. If I remember correctly prices go from 130 for the cheapest beers to 170 for a bottle of Orval. You can buy by the bottle or wholesale in which case the price is of course lower. They also sell those very beautiful belgian beer glasses, here again several types available. I invested in an Orval glass for 395 Baht. The owner, nice and helpful, will assist you in charting chart your course among all those different beers Of course it's (much) more expensive than the usual piels/lager, but there is no comparison in the taste either. Those Maredsous I drank yesterday tasted just divine...

A little expensive for Thailand but still reasonable, especially as their market is obviously homesick expats. My visit to the Maredsous Abbye is one of my favorite memories and the highlight of my first trip to Belgium. Great cheese, sausages and bread is made there too, and goes perfectly with the ales. Naturally.

Yes, I think the price is about right. Ah, those tours I made in Belgian... all 5 trappist abbayes in a row: Orval, Rochefort, Chimay, Westmalle and St Sixtus at Westvleteren. Splendid settings, great food and delicious beers, in an environement which mixes the joys of life and the riches of spiritual elevation !

Sauron, You seem to know a lot about the technical aspects of beer (congeners, fatty acids, etc.)..... I would like to check if you can confirm something: It is my understanding that light overtime degrades the taste/quality of beer. For this reason, most beers are bottled in the most expensive dark color bottles (green, brown, etc.) as opposed to clear cristal ones. Now comes Corona. Long ago, in Mexico Corona was never a premium beer. It was a beer for the masses -the working man. But they hit it big with their marketing campaign in the late 80s in the USA and from there they went all over the world. Of course, with so many Corona fans out there, every time I say this, they counter saying that it is not the case, that it is a premium beer etc. etc. And they counter by mentioning now the proliferation of brands with clear bottles. However, most of these new beers are "ice" versions, which I think are transported cold (thus in the dark -ie not left in the open or well lighted wharehouses for long) -in which case they would not be affected. Is there any truth to the above? Or was I the gullible one who bought this bs explanation about clear bottles from whoever gave it to me long ago (can't remember now) to me, and I have been wrongly repeating this ever since? Thanks

Somebody had to go and mention Corona! Damn it! That is one of my favorite. It is soooo expensive here in LOS. But I will no the less go and have a couple for old times sake tonight. I heard the same about Corona. In Mexico it is considered shit beer, but in America it is considered a great beer. Shows what westerners know about beer huh?

KRYTONITE, I cannot say CORONA is a nice beer. Come on....Not only Mexicans think that beer is far below the standards....several bars in many countries I've visited throughout Latin America barely consider it in their stocks. Even the lime stuff in the bottle neck does not improve the taste at all....wonder how hi-so Thais consider it a nice stuff....maybe cos of the high price? Saw it flowing very well among Thais at several latino pubs in Bangkok yiek yiek
