Quote: from atl on 8:16 pm on Aug. 14, 2008 I have a 2 friends with dual US and Thai passports and I have never heard anything about that being the case with Thaksin...he did attend Uni here, right?
Were they born in the US? Have they lived, continuously, in the US for over 10 years? If Thaksin were that smart, why was he toppled in a military coup, and why does he now find himself in the situation he is? Not very smart. As for the passports, regardless of how long they last -- once it is revoked, which it may be soon, he can't really go anywhere, except stay in England (wait for extradition), or fly back to Thailand (being Extradited). As it stands, if they hurry with the extradition requests (ah! unlikely to happen), England would have to comply, unless he applies for asylum. I doubt he would be granted asylum, but if he requests it, he can't be extradited until the request has been examined, and ultimately rejected. Essentially, he's playing a waiting game - hoping for his stooges to change the law, before he is forced back, or some other events to happen (which I won't spell out) that allow his safe return. I have a feeling he will be miscalculating on all counts.

The frozen accounts of the Shinawatras The totals in the Shinawatra accounts left in Thailand have been spoken of often, but it is interesting to contemplate the mind-boggling amounts broken down by various banks. The "major" accounts are 18,100,000,000 baht at Bangkok Bank 2,100,000,000 baht at the Bank of Ayudhya 39,600,000,000 baht at Siam Commercial Bank 1,400,000,000 baht at Thanachart Bank 500,000,000 baht at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives 15,700,000,000 baht at the Government Savings Bank 10,000,000,000 baht at the Islamic Bank of Thailand 2,700,000,000 baht at the Securities and Land Depository Centre (Source TNA/MCOT) ----------- Hacking into one of those bank accounts must be lucrative.

No surprise there -- PM Samak has said that Thaksin may keep his diplomatic passport - well, really, he said that he has 'no policy' about rescinding Thaksin's passport, but basically, he's not making any committed decision - which, I guess, is very Thai. PM: Thaksin can keep passport Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said Friday the government would not lift the diplomatic passport of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra. "The government has no policy to revoke Thaksin's red passport," Samak told reporters. His statement came after Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag said earlier that the Foreign Ministry was in the process of terminating Mr Thaksin's red diplomatic passport after he skipped bail and fled to London last week to evade corruption charges. Mr Tej also said that he would ask Mr Samak to consider the matter. On Thursday, supporters of People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) gathered outside the ministry, asking Mr Tej to revoke all passports of Mr Thaksin and his wife Potjaman on the grounds that they have been served with arrest warrants. The protesters also called on Mr Tej to ask the British government to reject the asylum petition filed by the couple.

Wow, looks like Thaksin has found a face saving way to divest himself of Man City - or, something... http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=129878 "Embarrassed" Thaksin offers to leave Man City (BangkokPost.com) - Deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has offered to step down from the board of Manchester City Football Club, according to club’s executive chairman Gary Cook. Mr Thaksin and his wife, Khunying Potjaman, skipped bail on Ratchadaphisek land deal case and flew from Beijing to London on August 11 after attending the opening of the Olympic Games. The court then issued warrant for their arrests and also seized bail totalling 13 million baht on the same day. “Doctor Thaksin has been really open about this,” according to Mr Cook's comments quoted in the British press. “The man is embarrassed about the indignity brought on the club and on the league. He never intended for this to be the case,” he revealed. "He has said to me: 'If you need me to resign as a director to serve the needs of the Premier League, I'm fine with that as long as it doesn't change anything else.'" "We're talking about a lot of things. We've talked about restructuring the board and selling part of his stake to an equity partner, who could come in and take some of the pressure away," he added. Mr Cook said security experts advised the ousted premier not to attend the home games of Manchester City during this period.

It's not the Thais they are worried about -- Thaksin has not exactly retained the love Mac City fans what with: - firing the most favored coach. - suggesting to change the Mac City emblem by adding the Thai flag, or an elephant to it. Thais abroad don't give a rat's ass. The most danger would come from Man City fans - plus, he has to maintain the illusion that his life is in danger from Thailand, in order for his asylum bid to go through. Not sure what he's worried about - he meets all the British requirements for asylum: - embezzled money - corruption - mass killings - fled due process after his wife was convicted. Yep, he should get a permanent visa and asylum in no time.
