You mean the one about the marine I met who ate his beer glass because he was getting bored with his girlfriend? He is the same one who thumped one of the 'Greenham Women' while out jogging in his Union Flag shorts. Or the one about the Royal Navy S-61 Sea King Helicopter touching down on the helicopter pad on a Soviet Cruiser during the Cold War and lifting off again. Much to the astonishment of the Russkies !

I had the honor of serving with the Special Forces where our aviation company was attached to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam (1967/68). Our group was pilots, doorgunners, and crewchiefs (not one of us had close to the training they had). I was a grunt who volunteered to work the doorguns and from the getgo, as a 19 year old was in awe of those guys. We would drop a team into a hole in the jungle and then come back for them 3 to 7 days later, and what they had to endure was incredible. They must have had some incredible experiences, but being a breed apart, quiet, and very businesslike, talked very little. In that year I don't think I remember any one of them saying more than 10 words to me. Maybe, if you did an extra good job of maybe pulling them in at a hot LZ, or helping with their wounded, you might get a nod. I knew they weren't ungrateful, or just being standoffish, they simply did their very difficult and dangerous job and did very little talking. If I had an opinion, I would say that most you meet in a bar that say they were special forces or SAS, may have been, but if they get into storytelling, then maybe not. I would think that most of them are still the strong silent type. By the way that year in vietnam is when I fell in love with southeast asian women. I loved the vietnamese people and loved thailand when I went on R&R to BKK. I have been back to Vietnam 3 times and am still amazed that that country can lose almost a generation of people hold no ill feelings toward their former enemy. Sorry this message is so long, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents on the issue, and got carried away. Peace

Quote: from Isee on 6:22 pm on Feb. 16, 2005 The more someone yaps on about being in one of these groups, the more you can be sure that it is bullshit as the real ones have nothing to prove.
...Just like this forum...The biggest posters are the biggest poseurs (See FR section). Its the quiet dudes that are the real "madmen".

Quote: from Baquawn on 2:06 am on Mar. 7, 2005 Normally if you were a former military guy, you can find some holes in fakers story, especially when you know the real deal.
When a guy tells me he's a Vietnam vet, I have a couple of questions I ask that every guy/gal who ever served in the military would know. You would be surprised at the number of fakes, I've run into over the years.

For Army/Marines, what's your MOS, short for military occupational skill. That's your job title. My MOS was 91S20, Preventive Medicine Specialist. I also was qualified in the following MOS 45C20, 71B20, 11F20 and 84F20. One of the above was an infantry MOS. For the vets which one is it? Another question how often did you take the MOS test?

BigDUSA, You must have been in a different military than I. What MOS test? They always had me doing something totally un-related to my training so I can honestly tell you I don't even remember my Military Occupational Specialty designation. In the U.S. Marines a Grunt had an MOS of 0311, Basic Infantryman. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing an MOS made up of a alphabetical/numeric combination. They were all 4 digit numbers back in "the old Corps."
