Hey Brothers! I am visiting LOS from 7/4 - 25/4. Being a fairly patriotic and respectful youngish man, I would like to pay my respects on the morning of April 25th at some sort of memorial service for the ANZAC's that did the hard yards and lost. Does anyone have any idea of planned commemoration services on 25/4 that I may be able to attend before heading off to sillypore for my flight home? Bangers or Phuket - it matters not! Would appreciate your input....one morning is not too big a sacrifce for me to pay my respects! Cheers Dabozman PS... only 23 more sleeps - yeah baby!

That reminds me, I arrived in Sydney on Anzac day 2002. I was staying at the Hilton (the one with the Marble Bar in the basement). The Taxi could not bring me to the Hotel because of the Anzac Day Parade. I was dumped Luggage and all across the street from my hotel. But could not cross the street because of the parade. Enjoyed a very patriotic Aussie parade. Even saw some veterans of WWI. Australia has reason to be proud. Previously in Singapore I went to the WWII cemetery and noticed numerous Australian gravestones which had a profound effect on me, then the POW prison. I mentioned this to an older Australian lady while chatting with her at the quay ferry station in Sydney. She told me about the many WWII age women who were unable to marry and have children because of the shortage of men. I then remembered years ago how Australia used to encourage immigration of able bodied men. May God bless all who paid the ultimate price and all who bare the scares of war.

In Pattaya the American's have the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club. They hold services for our vets. Maybe there's a Returned Serviceman's Club for the ANZAC vet's in Phuket? Few years back I was in OZ during ANZAC day. I spent the morning paying my respect's to my fellow Vietnam vets from OZ and New Zealand.

In the Anzac parade I saw there were many many Australian Viet Nam Veteran units that marched in the parade.

Good Links Broken Leg. HELLFIRE PASS and Kanchanaburi are the places to be that day. This year marks 60 years since the end of World War II and 90 years since the World War I landing at Gallipoli (Turkey) which was the original ANZAC day (ANZAC = Australian New Zealand Army Corps). ANZAC day dawn services are attended by hundreds of thousands of Australians each year to honour the memory of those who died in the "dreadful business" of all our wars. Some say it glorifies war but I tend to agree more with those who see it as the world's largest anti-war rally. LEST WE FORGET. THAILAND Hellfire Pass, Kanchanaburi A Dawn Service is to be held at 5:30am 25 April 2005 at Konyu Cutting, below the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, Kanchanaburi Province, approximately 250 km from Bangkok. The service lasts for approximately 30 minutes. Those wishing to attend should arrive at 5:00am for the 5:30am commencement. This will be followed by a gunfire breakfast. A wreathlaying will be conducted at 11:00am at the Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery.

Quote: from Broken Leg on 8:28 am on Mar. 16, 2005 The list of overseas cermonies is below. It says for Thailand there is a dawn service at the Hellfire pass museum, which is worth a trip on it's own.
Thanks Broken Leg - I gotta tell you that a visit to Hellfire Pass and the Jeath? museum & cemetry is what REALLY REALLY got me to understand / comprehend what ANZAC day means. Truly blew me away! Until then, it (25/4) was an excuse to get blind and have a day off afterwards. NOW, post 1993, I have been to dawn service every year to remember EVERYONE that were required to fight in war...ANY WAR. May change my flight to accomodate this ceremony....To me, only Gallipoli could be more "special" as far as rememberance is concerned..... Minder says it all " LEST WE FORGET". And Kenneth...no doubt Eddie has more propoganda on ANZAC day with chokerwood taking on Sheedydon...YAWN! PEACE!

If I recall correctly, ANZAC day is actually in commemoration of the battle of Gallipoli; but now that all the veterans from that have passed away (as far as I know) that now it is expanded out to include the other wars - WW2, Vietnam, Korea, and so on - because otherwise there is no actual link to the day itself - a move I think is good, although not sure why 1993 is significant for this? Did something happen in 1993 to cause this to happen? It was mandatory to go at school though. Perhaps some of the international schools do something? Actually, there are probably more ANZACs at NEP than anywhere else, maybe there could be some service there at 5pm.

Ummm....I'll be out of NEP on 25/4 - and LOS for that matter - as it will be time to head back home....GROAN!
