Nope, gave them B1,000. I am a cheap son of a bitch and I can guarantee you that is the last thing in the world that would do is make that mistake. Besides I only had the B1000 notes that I got from the ATM, no B500 bills. I did have a few B100 and B20 bills.
Actually I don't find the B500 and B1,000 notes looking alike at all, but do find the more worn B100 and B1000 looking similiar. You would sure hear it from Thai person if you gave them B100 and said was B1000 that is for sure. Other way around not so sure.

It's a pain in the ass, but I try to always make sure I have more small bills and small change than I think I will need. Also, when possible, I try to know the price in advance and have that amount ready-this includes having it in my hand before I get to the person who takes the money and have it visible to that person BEFORE he/she decides to try to overcharge me. It cuts down on a lot of problems.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to mention this, but the bank that changes money near the 7-11 on the corner of Sukhumvit and soi 4 (towards soi 2) ripped a friend of mine off for $100. They shortchanged him when he was on the way to the airport and he didn't realize it until he was flying. One year later, he changed money there again and they tried to rip him off again. They counted the money in front of him and then sort of scooped one of the bills off of the counter out of sight. He was prepared for it this time and caught them. Beware of this bank (I don't remember what the name of it is, but it is next to the ATM (I'm sure many of you guys know it)

One suggestion. You could record the serial numbers of the bills. This avoids defacing the bill and can help you recognize it later. Also, they probably won't try to hide it because they won't think you can identify it.

Wow.. with all these dangers and hassles affecting poor foreigners in Thailand, perhaps everyone would be better off staying at home, wearing slippers, reading the papers and drinking a nice hot mug of cocoa.
Jeez people..strategies for correctly initialling your banknotes to avoid defacing the King's image?

Off the "change" track a little but this is a recent scam. It really happened to me.
This happened in the Sukhumvit area near the Emporium center and there is a danger it could spread elsewhere.
Two good looking 18 year old TGs come to your car as you are parking it.
One starts wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, the other comes to your window saying "sawasdee khaa" while bending over with her breasts almost coming out of her blouse.
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say no and beg you for a ride to another shopping center. You agree and tell them to sit in the back seat.
On the way they start having sex in the back seat. Then one of them jumps to the front seat and starts to perform oral sex on you while the other one steals your wallet.
I was robbed last Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but I couldn't find them Saturday or Sunday.

Might I also suggest that the negative reprecussions of this scam can be avoided by taking their cell phone numbers to ensure they can be found everyday.
