When I travel around Bangkok and look at the marvellous monuments created by the Thai people, I just sit back and take a few moments to take it all in, the splendour of it all.
Then would'nt you know it, the peaceful ambiance is shattered by a mob of bloody westerners who turn up in their tour coach and file out one by one, like a mob of penguins in line.
Now if that was not enough, they have these huge guts and a pair of bloody shorts on with lilly white legs, what a revolting sight.
Now I know why Thai people bow to us, "Because they are f***ing laughing their heads off and cannot keep a straight face and have to look at the ground for 5 minutes".
What a great sight walking down Sukhumvit, 2 or 3 goose steeping, waddling, clod hopping, overweight farang men from the world over in their shorts and some even have braces to hold them up, because their guts are so large, you know, their bodies are shaped like a pear.
But what is more ridiculous is that they are also wearing a singlet and bear in mind it is winter here now, not cold but a little chilly, but they want to wear singlets, huh. Would they wear that outfit in their own capital city, I doubt it. And what about some of them in the cammo gear.
I know Johnny Rambo did a movie over here long ago and these may be his remains. Are we at war??, in Bangkok people wearing cammo, shorts, long pants, shirts, bandanas and flak jackets. I seen one the other day in Khao San Rd, decked out in mountain climbing boots, cammo trousers, cammo shirts with a small back pack, how ridiculous, like I say, no wonder the Thai people laugh at Farangs.
I think we can improve the farang image a lot by dressing more appropriately in Bangkok. May I suggest something like,
a tailored shirt, short sleeves of course or polo shirt,
clean jeans or trousers, shorts with knee high sox & shoes. None of those long shorts either, looks like you did not have enough money to buy jeans and could only afford a 3/4 of a pair of jeans, minus the shortness of the legs type.
We may find ourselves a little closer to the Thai people if we adopt a uniform system of dress in this country.

Most of the people you describe at the tourist sites are package tourists who barely know what country they are in. I have met several people from various countries who have told me they really enjoyed their trip to Langkawi or Penang in Thailand but now planned to go to somewhere else next time since they had already "done Asia."
As for Khao San Rd types, they thrive on all doing things differently the same way and dressing accordingly.
IMHO both groups are only in transit through Thailand and will never change - one group doesn't know any better and the other doesn't want to learn.

I agree with all on the slobs, but some things to remember. There are plenty of thais wearing Camo gear, shorts, dresses, etc. It is part of fashion these days.
The reason Farang tourists get all kit'ed up in Safari wear is because they think they are going on their jungle vacation, and don't want to pack for every kinda dress situation, if the majority of the time they are going to be in some beach place.
Just some things to keep in mind. Hopefully they move go down to Pattaya where Fat, Ugly, non-dressers are the norm.

I said the same thing six months ago upon my return from BK and I got dozen flames on here. I agree some farangs dress like shit and are embarrassing. The most "unique" outfit I noticed was some dude on Soi 5/6 who was about 295 pounds wearing loafers, white just below the knee socks, short khacki shorts, and Polo shirt that had some holes in it. And he was with a cute BG. My response to any BG who asks me for 3k short time is, I have just called the above Poor Sap he is on his way, twat.

Actually Barrafish if you live here you do not want to change a thing. The state of Thai television is terrible and these people fill the void as being comical entertainment. Have a seat at the Landmark outside cafe and enjoy the show!
Additionally the same arguement can be made about 90% of the BG's whol dress in jeans, T shirts wearing flip-flops and carrying little stuffed animal purses. Both types deserve each other and just add to the entertainment value.
Enjoy the show and now you know why they call it Land of Smiles.

Most times they get away with murder cause we always picture them naked anyway but admit it, Thai girls have crappy dress sense.
Cartoon character tops and T shirts with crass lettering, hair ties that never match any of the other three colors she's wearing. Co-ordination from head-to-toe? Not a chance. Face it, the only co-ordinated outfits you ever see are the shop girls black-white-black uniforms.
At least the tourist slob can dress to impress when the holiday ends and he's chained back up in the office.
