I have had a thoughtful e-mail from a friend resident in Bangkok saying he is sorry to see the smiles disappearing in the Land of Smiles?

The he told me a girl in the supermarket tried to stop him taking bottles of tonic water !

He politely pointed out in Thai that they were non-alcoholic. Eventually she relented !

It was some time in the afternoon when alcohol cannot be bought or consumed.

I have had about ten trips since 2001 and certainly have noticed the difference. More so since 2003.

I used to look forward to my trips to Thailand but now the enthusiasm has gone. I have to go to visit family.

Now I feel bored and even a cliche looks attractive.

I put the blame squarely on Thaksin and his cronies for removing Thai-ness and a certain amount of money from the ordinary Thai pocket.

Anybody else feel the same ?

For £1 I get 67 Baht. Most places seem to be charging 125 baht for a beer. Almost £2. That is approaching UK prices. Opening hours are now freeing up in the U.K.
The rest of Europe is sensible about boozing as usual.

Below is a snippet from AsiaBugle (BaronBonk) for 15th February. I think it is worth reading ?

However you want to wrap it up Thailand is in a state of flux. The general view is that Wacky Tacky may survive but his street cred is rapidly disappearing. His authority has been seriously eroded and there is a good possibility of an impeachment hearing. As a result of this, those that can are getting theirs noses deeper and deeper into the trough and those with other agendas are doing their best to promote them. There has been a crack down on closing times and showing in Pattaya by the Bangkok Police, similarly on Friday night there were police all over Soi Cowboy causing closure at 1 pm, instead of the agreed 1.30. In Nana Plaza Angels Disco (Nana Hotel) is now closing at 2 am, instead of 3 am. Then in sharp contrast many bars, including all of Nana Plaza were allowed to open on Monday's Buddha day, Soi Cowboy was partly open and Pattaya was closed. One seasoned operator told me it is all about money. Other police forces want what is going to the home police force to let things happen. But another is of the view that the puritanical arm of the Thai Rak Thai, which supported Purachai's campaign, have been let out of their box once again now that TW has lost control. Either way money or agenda: it does not matter, operating a bar is more tricky than ever. I am told the issue at Angels Disco is money: they are simply not prepared to pay the amount demanded for 3 am closing. I would not mind betting that it could soon be back to 1 am, that might make the amount demanded more acceptable if the option was no payment and 1 am, or payment and 3 am……..if you get the gist!!
Although having said that generally the regulatory problems have been getting less and less of an issue. There is much more see about town and there are places to go that will serve all night. Certainly Bangkok has a great deal more to offer than a year, or so ago, when heavy handed enforcing of everything made some of us wonder if Bangkok's famous nightlife would even survive!

.....And some stuff on Visas:-

There was a big story this week about 12 persons on a visa run bus being arrested, kept in jail for 2 days. They were then held for another 3 days in various places until their embassies managed to talk some sense into Thai Immigration and they were only deported so they could complete their visa run and return to Phuket. None of the person had overstayed by much and one person was one day over and had visited Immigration the day before and been told to go on a visa run. This was near Ranong which is north of Phuket. The story goes that the officials wanted 5k each to let the overstayers go. What ever the truth it once again rams home the line: do not overstay. I have heard of this happening in Bangkok : where queues waiting for the visa run bus are often targeted and any overstayers arrested. I have also been told of vehicles, with farangs in them, being stopped near the Cambodian border for passport checks. So I suppose the morel to the story is if you have overstayed do not go on visa run other than through Bangkok airport. Because once you are at immigration you are safe accept for the 200 Baht per day fine!

No.

Maybe you feel that way simply because you have become jaded from your numerous trips, and because the nature of your trips has changed -- thus, you prefer to blame external influences (the ever popular Thaksin blame) for your shortcomings in the excitement department.

Personally, I can't share your experiences, as I just returned from 10 days over there, and certainly did not notice a shortage of smiles, excitement, or fun (or any of the reported rises in prices, quite the opposite) - and I had no trouble fiding venues that remained open until 4 or 5 am...

Maybe it's just you.
