Here is a story about an American Millionare who was captured and extridated from LOS and is now being tried for murder for hire: http://edition.cnn.com/2006/LAW/02/27/socialite.slain.ap/index.html You would have thought that his millions (along with having a local wife) would have shielded him from extradition. Lesson learned -- Let the bitch divorce you but skip the country with your cash before the judgment comes final. I do not believe that civil actions (such as alimony) can touch you overseas...

You may be right about the alimony. Though I know of a guy (an ex-employee) from Texas who had the problem here that the US Embassy apparently would not stick some extra pages in his passport for him as he owed child support back home. Guess they wouldn't renew it either. Well, that was his story. Unsympathetic light already. If it was something more serious he didn't let on. In any event, guess one's escape plan should be fairly well researched before one goes for it.

seajohn, I suspect your mate had other problems. Although there is a movement to catch child support dodgers, this still is a judgement at the state level and should not affect a federal level agency. That being said there is no guarentee that Congress will not pass a law limiting access to deliquent dads. But alimony is not child support and I do not believe is enforcable overseas without civil action on the local level...

If you keep a very low profile and stay away from Police friends and making people angry I am sure you can avoid extradition. But since the new laws came Thailand is very willing to send home what ever other countries ask for. If you had problem at home get a new passport and do not get a local wife. Do the visa runs in some local dump or by the stamps from some corrupt cop. Never go to Bangkok immigration stay local and you be fine.

Sad story... I for one largely support the execution of greedy wives looking for fancy alimony. A friend is going through some hard time with his son's mother at the moment and I admire how he refrains from passing a screwdriver through her brain. Feel pity for that poor dude... 12 women in the jury... going down... AP, assistant dreamed I sawed a lady in pieces a couple of night ago... but somehow she stays loyal... go figure...

One of my US employees needed some pages in his passport a couple of years ago. We sent it to the US Embassy in Riyadh and they called, said he owed back child support and his passport was being cancelled. They then punched three holes in it so he could not travel. After some scrambling around and the payment of some $5,000 to his ex-wife, he got a clearance from the courts in Pennsylvania. We took the clearance along with his old passport and the Embassy issued him a new passport. Had he been unable to cough up the money, the US Embassy told me they would provide him with a one way travel document to travel to the US only. Believe me, guys. If you are on what is called the "Dead Beat Dads" list, the US Embassy will get you sooner or later. Edit in: This is now part of Federal Law, enacted by our illlustrious members of congress when they are not stealing us blind.

They probably would have, but nothing can protect against high-profile stupidity. "He lived in luxury as he eluded authorities on a cross-continent run -- from Palm Beach to Costa Rica to Panama to Venezuela, and then to Thailand, where he married a local woman and bought a condominium in a posh beachside neighborhood." Obviously, the guy needed the attention of pretending to be rich - that's all nice and good, but that's kinda hard to combine with being 'on the lam' unless he had been samart enough to set himself up with a new identity, and LIVE that identity, and preferably either trade spaces to a nice, out of the way, luxury villa upcoountry, or a smaller standard of living in an out of the way place. My guess is the guy lived 'in a posh way', and rubbed a few folks the wrong way, who typed his name into Google, and reported him to the authorities. To wit, a Google search on 'James Sullivan': http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=%22James+Sullivan%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 Let me put it this way - if you have an UNSOLVED MYSTERIES episode (september 25, 2001) dedicated to you, then maybe you ought to keep a lower profile: http://www.unsolved.com/0107-Sullivan.html http://www.ourgeorgiahistory.com/chronpop/1000080 (Some local guy saw him on 'America's Most Wanted' and turned him in) And, as an interesting aside, he shares his name with another criminal (small time) : http://www.mugshots.com/Historical/James+Sullivan.htm I'm sure his mugshot will join that site soon. Moral: Be smart, and don't brag about your money.

Re; alimony and child support. I agree there are some very greedy women out there ready to take their former partners to the cleaners. But there are many men who avoid paying anything towards the up keep of their children and this is wrong and I support every effort made to make them pay up. Whatever there nationality including the Thai’s who seem to be able to walk out of a marriage with little formality and no obligation to even pay for the up keep of their off spring. One day no doubt Thailand will catch up with the civilized world and then of course everybody will moan because there are fewer women working in bars, etc. BB

Extradition generally has to with the relations between governments and existing extradition treaties. Were I a fugitive on the run, Thailand would be a poor choice as the US and Thailand have strong relations. He would have been much better off in a country like Myanmar or even Viet Nam or any country with weak or strained ties with the U.S. and bribing local officials. The google article seemed to imply that America's Most Wanted airs in Thailand. Is that right?
