a friend of mine is going to buy a 26 foot boat from Malaysia and hopes to cruise around the Fiji Islands and basically retire on the boat. He said he is buying it for 20,000 Canadian. He was a Merchant Marine for some 20 years. My

I thought about it and was wondering if mooring a boat some where and just living on it was at all practical.I imagine if the boat had living quarters the size of a small tent, that one would surely get cabin fever. Have you heard of anyone actually retiuring on a boat?

If it weren't for the pirates and visa hassles, it would be great to live in SE Asia on a boat.

Can any experienced mariners give me some thoughts on this. What would be the minimun size before it would be practical. Not just for sleeping, but also for cooking.

Any good websites on the idea?

Phuket Gazzete has a good selection of FAQ about habour fee and others. You can bet there is BUNCH of pappers you need to fill in once you land on Thai soil.

Oldtimer
Oldtimer used to live on a sail boat in Hong Kong harbour many decades ago, but it would have been smarter to have bought a condo at the time they started to be built in the very early 70's...still the boat was eventually sold for a small profit.

"Would you like to see my boat?" was always a good question to pop to the ladies after dinner.

I lived on my boat for 2 years while working at Heathrow Airport, great mooring on the Thames near Windsor. It was tied up at the bottom of a mates garden with full use of the pool mains water and electric, great in summer but a bit parky in the winter.

My boat is a 1930 classic wooden river/inshore 'Gentlemans motor yacht' She was used to rescue the troops of the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940 and the as a Navy mine patrol boat for the rest of WW 11.

Have only holidayed on the boat since then and attended some rallys, but my retirement plan is to use the boat in the summer and spend the winters in asia. I'm living in KL at the moment but have not had much time to check out the boating scene, I'm planning to hang around here on contract completion and travel malaysia.

Tyfon I suggest you take a look at an old teak rice barge, there are a few plying for hire as hotel boats. Spent an overnight trip on one from Ayatheya down to BKK. Now I might consider one of those but it wouldn't be ocean going.

Your friend should check out the pirate situation before venturing too far, especialy with the unrest on the Thai/Malay border.

Retiring on a sea-worthy craft sounds a wonderful and romantic prospect if one was to remain in Thai territorial waters or some of the open river systems. The choice of boat would not be so important, so long as there was enough space on it.

The pleasant task of choosing your First Mate could take some considerabe time on land, having to interview and thoroughly cross-examine them, give them medicals and ensure that they were up to all aspects of the job, before going for sea-trials.

The signing up of a crew would also be a monumental and labourious task that you could not assign to anyone esle, as would the designing and making of attractive uniforms of a minimal amount of material and regulation belts and buckles and the restraints needed in the event of a mutinous member.

However, if your friend really did intend to sail the South-East Asian seas, I would definitely recommend shoppping in a Royal Naval shipyard, back in the U.K. where he could easily find the gun displacements, radar tracking systems, torpedo batteries and additional armaments to protect himself from the flotillas and fleets of cut-throat prirates who operate these seas even today and clog up the South China Seas and the Singaporean straits.

The first practical step would be to enquire at the Admiralty about possibly being given pieces of essential advice and wisdom from those experienced in the knowledge of sailing in these waters.

I can save him time.

All their words would amount to one big "Don't".

On the other hand, if your friend is fortunate enough to be abe to afford a second-hand nuclear submarine, then, that would be slightly different. The difficulty would be in obtaining the fuel. But if he is a handy-man and is skilled in Naval architecture, maybe he could spend a few months modifying it to be paddle-driven.

But I don't suppose this helps.

Joe:

While I know your intentions are merely to help our friend that appears lost at sea, as it were. After reading your post, I immediately called two Naval architects into my office and presented the problem to them.

The general concensus is the shape, tonnage, displacement and overall efficiency of the submarine would be affected too greatly by making it paddle-driven. They both concur, however, that should the weapons systems be removed it might be possible to secure a sail and make some sort of headway in this manner.

Removing the weapons systems, however, raises the ugly spectre of pirates yet again.

Alas, our feeling is that a nuclear submarine is NOT the best way to retire afloat.

One of the wags suggested perhaps a Zodiac with a pup tent?

The first mate's name was Chester
He was the virgin tester.
He'd thrust his prick through membrane thick
Through scab and sore and fester.

........The 2nd mate's name was carter......and so on.
Any names other than 'The Good Ship Venus' come to mind for our friend's little 'Love Boat?'
