PTT Speedway is an indoor go-kart track on Royal City Avenue. Open for over two years, I passed by it often this past year on my way up to see various movies at the Houserama Cinema upstairs. Today was my first visit. What a blast it was flying karts around the track!!! We came away thoroughly amused and impressed with the setup. Visit their web page at: KartingStadium.com [Noise alert! Be sure and turn down your speakers first] I took quite a few pictures of the facility but found their web site to be very informative. Another nice write up in the Net can be found here: GoKart If anyone's interested in more pics gimme a shout and I'll post what I took when I have some time.... If you're looking for some adrenale fun this place will have you amped on your first lap. Honest!

Skip, Thanks for the info. I've done the track on Phuket a couple of times, always a blast, especially in their high performance carts (actually easier to race than the standard ones because they drift better). Didn't know this one was right around the corner in BKK, will have to check it out next time I'm in town. - Balls

Whoa! Really? Hmmm...you might wanna compare the karts at RCA, before you assume that, Balls, cause I was able to effortlessly throw the rear-ends out at will on the slower carts at RCA. "At will" meaning- a flick of the wrist. And that feature alone made for some wicked fun going around them corners.... Bwah-ha-ha!! PS- The owner mentioned they'll be setting up a sister operation in Pattaya within a few months time.

Skip, Sounds like even the "slow" carts at RCA are faster than the regular ones on Phuket. The problem with the regular carts on Phuket is they were under powered, so it was tough to get momentum back up, and they had the standard brakes. So one has to really muscle them around. The power and brakes on the fast carts made it much easier to set up for the corners, and the power was there when you needed it to keep the back end down (the old "don't lift in the corners" deal, lol). But not to diss the Phuket track, I loved every minute, and at the end, the owner even gave my brother and I a free round of sodas, as we'd stayed for a couple of hours (much to my TGF's chagrin, lol. She wasn't in a racing mood that day). I liked the higher performance carts because they are capable of stuff the slower ones can't do. But Phuket is an asphalt track and RCA looks like wooden one (from the website link you provided) so I'll bet it behaves a whole lot differently. Also sounds like their "slow" carts aren't' so slow, lol. When I tried to do what you are describing at Phuket with the slower carts, I had to really jerk the wheel to get it to break traction and slip sideways, especially on the hairpin. Then it took forever (well, a couple of seconds anyway) for the power to kick back in. So the times overall were slower. Smooth is fast, and the high-powered carts at Phuket let you stay on the edge and set up a rhythm through the corners, dancing on the edge of traction. But your comments just whet my appetite! Yet another reason to get back to BKK pronto! BTW, do they have beginner carts for speed-shy amateurs like my TGF? - balls

Interesting comments, Balls. The slow carts are the beginners carts. The track is actually a smooth concrete floor. The difference between asphalt and smooth concrete must add up to a whole nother reality- if you catch my drift. However, the same slow-to-get-back-up-to-speed physics apply with the engines. I was throwing the kart every which way around the corners trying to set up a line with some momentum. Sure, I lost a lot of seconds, but it seemed like the karts were fairly quick to get back to speed. What felt really nice was you could easily feather the slide to optimize your line through the many curves. The one thing I didn't try too much which would have been the best approach would have been to stay on the gas [under your right foot] while scrubbing off speed via braking with the left foot. Since it's indoors and on the second floor this Bangkok track has a lot of turns and the few straights are very short. It wouldn't surprise me if the two tracks are laid out in very different ways.

Skip, yep, the Phuket track has a very long straightaway that comes after a really long sweeper, so you can go full throttle through the sweeper and be at the top end all the way down the front straight. Fast enough so if you crashed you could seriously hurt yourself. The drift coming out of the sweeper onto the straightaway feels great. I tried the foot on gas and brake at the same time like you suggested, it helped to keep up the momentum, but the engines on the slower carts just don't have the horsepower. Jumping into the pro-level carts was a huge difference, and a lot more fun. Stickier tires, more horses, great brakes, and a better suspension. Steering was much more sensitive. The curves at RCA sound like great fun. After all, anyone can go fast in a straight line. The challenge is getting the line and rhythm. I'm really curious to find out what the concrete feels like, as it' gotta be smoother than the outdoor track and more predictable. Damn, wish I were there to try it, but duty has me stranded in the punting backwaters of Amerika at the moment! - Balls

I’m gonna have to drop in there when I’m in BKK later this month. Has anyone checked out the open-wheel formula cars at the Bira circuit in Pattaya? The place is called Taki racing, but their website doesn’t seem to be working: http://www.takiracing.com Supposedly offer 1, 2 and 3 day performance driving school in formula Renaults… I’m thinking this is probably cheaper then those types of setups in North America like Skip Barber. Has anyone ever checked this out or have any info? Does it even exist anymore? I’d love to get behind the wheel of one of those for a day or two! Forsa
