Shredded Wheat
Mrs Shreddie tells me the house up country is now finished and she has moved in. I will get to see it in a couple of weeks - cannot wait.

We agreed a while ago, when Mrs S was still in the UK, that she would buy a dog. We decided we both liked labradors and that a lab would have the right temprament.

Now Mrs S tells me she has bought 2 rottweiler puppies - both dogs. They are so lovely she tells me. She only intended buying 1 but the other one looked up and smiled at her so she could not resist.

They are about 1 week old and still with their mother. Mrs S says she paid 2K THB and gets them in a few weeks. Someone has whispered in her ear about these being good guard dogs:

"For sure they will look after your house when they are both big dogs. Just as if it was their own! They will let no one in!" (Including Mrs Shreddie and I, I bet).

What a nice welcome home I imagine they will give us when they are grown up and we have been away from the house for a while! Jumping all over us.

I have told Mrs S no way are we having these dogs. We are not dog experts and these dogs will be our boss if we are not careful. All we need is a dog with a decent temprament that will bark when it gets spooked and wake us up.

I read somewhere also that Jack Russell terriers are OK for LOS as they attack and kill snakes & will take on a cobra (advert in Pattaya Mail I think). So maybe we get the labrador and we also get a JRT. But we give the Rottweilers to the village teenagers for the BBQ.

Any dog lovers out there on the forum who can recommend good breeds that will look after the house up country and not try to eat us when we come home after a night out?

Anyone have any suggestions for a good BBQ sauce that goes well with Rottweiler?

I'm sure I'm going to hell now, but this post made me piss my pants laughing!

Surely something like this should be posted in Korea Tonight though?

Rottweilers will not attack their own pack, and *DO* make good guard dogs.

Labs are cozier dogs, and far friendlier in appearance, but less intimidating, if that's your priority.

Whatever you do, don't get a poodle.

Consider a Thai Bang Kaew dog. They are native to Thailand so are adapted to the climate. They will certainly look after your house for you. They do have a tendency to bark a lot though and are agressive towards visitors. Could be a handful if you have not had a dog before.

Thai BangKaew Dog

- General Appearance
The Bang Kaew is a square built, well proportion dog with wide and deep chest. He has double coat with ruff around neck and shoulders a pluming tail.

- Temperament
He is alert, intelligent, loyal, watchful and obedient. He has an inherent desire to protect home and family and can be trained to work.

- Size, Proportion, Substance
Height : measured at the withers :
- dogs, 19 - 21 inches (48-53 centimeters),
- +++es, 17 - 19 inches (43-53 centimeters) with the range of +_ 1 inches (1-2 centimeters).
Weight :
- dogs approximately 19-21 kilograms,
- +++es approximately 16 - 28 kilograms.
Proportion : the body in profile is of square proportion in that a horizontal line
from the front of the forechest to the rear projection of the withers to the ground.
Substance : well balanced musculature. Male larger boned than their female counterparts.

We just finished our house up-country as well and bought a dog to watch over it. Well, actually the dog was to be a pet for my daughter but that's another story.

She fell in love with a Shitzu, which is a small dog. Now, this dog will not attack and destroy any intruders. What it will do is hide under the bed, bark like crazy and hopefully awaken somebody.

I had a cop friend tell me one time never to buy a big dog as a watch dog. They are always hungry so a perp can lob a piece of meat treated with valium over the fence, want 20 minutes and walk peacefully inside.

My wife wanted a golden retriever. I told her we didn't want to bring the bad guys back....we wanted to run them off.

But they often get confused:

Anytime you have a Rottweiler or pit bull-type dog, there is a chance for disaster, one that you will regret the rest of your life. That will not happen in every case, but why take a chance?

I doubt whether you even the valium. Any dog will become your friend if you start feeding it. I feed my neighbor's dog cheese over the fence a few times, and it never barked at me again.

Rots and Pit Bulls are both great dogs I have close friends that are partial to both of them. One has had at least one and as many as five pit bulls continuously for many, many years – thru two marriages and three kids. Another friend that has had one or two rots for the better part of twenty years – he is still on his first marriage but working of kid number four. Neither of these guys has ever had one of their dogs bite another person or another dog. IMHO it is about how the dogs are raised more than an inherent violent nature of the breeds. One of my neighbors when I lived in the States had one of the meanest dogs I have ever been around and it was a beagle.

If I were to consider a dog for Thailand I would probably stay with a local breed. The climate in Thailand is too taxing on most other breeds. The only possible exception I would make would be if the dog was to be pretty much exclusively an inside dog in which case I might consider a non-native smaller breed (like a pug).

No one is saying that all rots and pit bulls will bite someone. But the odds are definitely higher than many other dogs, and the results can be fatal. Why take a chance?

Obviously it does depend on how the dog is raised. But some dogs have been bred over many years by nature to be meaner than others, and you are constantly fighting these natural instincts that lie just beneath the surface of every animal, including humans.
