If you have a DL from your country it will be fine...

I drove on my Georgia DL the entire time I lived in Phuket and had an accident and the cop was cool with it...all the people renting jeeps on samui and phuket are using their home DL's as well...

In Singapore it is issued by the Singapore Auto Club and in the US the American Auto Association. If you check on google there is probably an agency or two that does this.

As for atl's advice, it is not wise. The international agreements regarding drivers licenses require that you maintain a license on your possession that is translated into the local language.

This is in essence what an international drivers license does, it provides a template of your driving privileges as they exist in the country of your license's issue in all major languages and several minor ones.

Technically the cop could have impounded atl's car and subjected him to a hefty fine (or in the case of the BIB a bribe)...

CS,

yes I did incur a little bribe...but as posted before it was my fault and happened in the morning after a night of debauchery...so I was in the wrong and am happy to have gotten of as easy as I did

the bribe didnt happen because of my DL..he looked at it and was cool but the fact I was an idiot and reaked of alchohol was the reason he got the pay off...

you are correct, but when I sold condo's we all had cars in bkk and I cant think of one person out of the 5 farangs that had a thai DL..

Most of the major car rental companies in Thailand only require you to have a license that is in Roman characters to rent a car. I don’t have an international nor a Thai license, and I have never been questioned any of the times I have been pulled over in Thailand about using my State drivers license from the US. The way the boys in brown are I am fairly certain that if it was necessary to have an international license they would have hit me up at least once.

As for the translation into the local language, even if one were to get an international license it would not be translated into Thai.

Maybe not a problem in other countries but the US has issued warnings about some of the internet vendors that are offering international licenses that are actually worthless in the US:

I think you'll also find that under Thai law you are only able to use your home country driving license for up to 1 year in Thailand. In other words if you have not left Thailand for 1yr, your home country license is no longer valid in thailand.
There is a thread on getting a Thai license, it helped me get mine, at worst it's half a day of hanging around and a few easy tests, all in for a few hundred baht, well worth it of you have the time.

I have been using an International Driving Permit issued in the UK in conjunction with my UK licence. In the UK the AA are authorised to issue them (that's the Automobile Association not Alcoholics Anonymous!). Some main post offices issue them as agents for the AA. Details here

http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/index.html

Nobody stopped me while I was at the wheel. A friend told me that if stopped it can be useful to wave the International Driving Permit as it is a paper licence with no bar codes etc and with no Thai translation; then play the dumb farang with no speak Thai. As the Thai police do not want extra paperwork they may well just wave you on your way then. If you show your national licence with its computerised bar-code it is much simpler for them to process you and they may be more inclined to delay you.

Here is the AA's list of countries where the International Driving permit can be used. These countries all signed up to some international treaty or other to allow it to be used in each other's countries. As the site says, these are the requirements as they apply to holders of UK licences; it may be different if your licence is from a different country.

For what its worth... was stopped at toll booth here in BKK and pulled over. I knew the drill; it was "Fleece a Falang" day. Gave him a California ID card that has been expired for about 5 years.

He looked at it and said "Your license doesn't say 'International' on it. You must pay fine"

I asked how much and he said BT 500. I paid and drove on. Always happy to donate on "Fleece a Falang" day.
