Financial Gain in Spain is now a real pain

EVERY year nearly 60,000 quit Britain to move to Spain, dreaming of golden beaches, blue skies and jugs of sangria.

But in recent months life in the sun-kissed paradise has turned to purgatory.

Punishing exchange rates have left many counting the cost of life on the Spanish Costas.

In the past year the British Pound has plunged almost 12 PER CENT against the Euro – and ex-pats on fixed incomes such as British pensions are severely out of pocket as a result.

To add to the misery, Spanish house values have fallen by 20 PER CENT in some areas – which is terrible news for the thousands who want to come home but cannot find a buyer or cannot afford to sell.

Hundreds more also face the prospect of bulldozers moving in on "illegal" homes which breach local planning laws.

In the Costa Blanca, For Sale signs have sprung up in every street.

Some tragic couples are even being forced to sell their furniture for spot cash to keep the creditors at bay.

Article adapted from The Sun.

Could it happen in Thailand?

Could you substitute the word Thailand for Spain in the article above ?

Prices in Thailand are certainly going up. The Baht is much stronger against the pound than it has been of late. The International rate stands at 62.3 THB to the UK pound. It didn't seem long ago it was 75+ THB to the pound.

Are Thai property prices doing or about to do the same as Spain ?

Are ex-pats in Thailand about to go through the Spanish experience ?

If there's a money crunch in LOS it's not being mentioned here, my believe is the BTF group are all doing very well, at least I don't see furniture for sale in the classified
To bad about Spain & C.R., looks like their yankee go home attitude will be turning into reality
Possibly some of the 'jumpers' in PTY had their bank accounts get a little thin, but they haven't been posting the info your looking for

Assuming this isn't some conspiracy tin foil theory, I'm sorry, but if a 12% fluctuation puts you in a critical financial situation, then you're seriously mismanaging your money, or living above your means.

A direct result of keeping the pound, if the uk were not so anti euro these people would be calculating their lives in the same currency.

Noone gets off though I have savings in the uk so im not amused by such rates, on the other hand I wont fade away either. So I tend to follow the duck on that one.

I also think that their is a difference between moving with a uk women to spain against having a Thai partner in Thailand.Im talking about a real relationship not one based on just cash though.

People who moved to spain and need to sell up and go ' home ' within six months should never have left.
Personally I left the UK 25 yrs ago when it was under Thatcher and its still one of the best decisions of my life.

Thailand is still a bargain, by western standards, but if the baht continues to strengthen this could change. If retirees on fixed income can't afford to live here and new foreign migration diminishes, then property values will fall from low demand without a growing thai middle class to make up the difference. Sure, it could happen here.

Welcome back, Brother Wolf. Glad you escaped your alien internment, or at least let out for good behavior.

I understand the Russian economy is booming, and I've seen there are more Russians in Thailand than years past. I wish I knew if the Russian influx was a clever scheme by Thai financiers seeking their investment, or if it's just unimportant accidents of supply and demand.

When I see the building boom in Pattaya, I think it must be another bubble about to pop. But then I wonder if money from Russia is actually significant and will be one of the things that makes it all different this time. It will be interesting to see how it plays out... Unfortunately Pattaya as a Russian retirement communitiy, 20 years from now, might be "same same but different" for Thais, but wouldn't benefit my personal retirement plans.
