Some of my Thai friends are quite concerned that the present "political protests", will effect safety. I am curious from those of you who presently live in Bangkok; do you feel any change? When I was recently there, I fely quite safe, everythere I went. Yet the PRESS and MEDIA, kept reporting that all hell was breaking out! In addition, the hotels seemed to be taking a hit last month. They were half empty. Usually the occupancy rate in my hotel there is 97%. Should visitors be concerned; or is it being played up in the media.

Been in BKK 2 weeks and Ubon 2 weeks. Haven't seen anything different. Except for 1 day where there was a larger police presence on the street in BKK. Also, I have talked to several Thais who just said, like jingjo, to stay away from protest areas. Don't know about hotel occupancy. The 2 that I have stayed at claim 100% occupancy, but I don't know that this is true. When I visited Darjelling to check it out the girl begged me to send more customers their way, but it is a brand new hotel with little advertisement so this is not a surprise. Bottom line, everything the same AFAIK, but, TIT.

There is no question that the tourist trade is down. I am very close to the "Asian Airlines", they tell me that that bookings to Thailand are down 30%. The hotels I work with are also down. You must also consider that the economy is really taking a hit the past two weeks. Either way, I travel to BKK and still do business there. I feel safe and comfortable throughout the Country. I follow your advice and keep away from the "protesting areas", the same way I watch what neighborhoods I go into in America. Just use common sense. Still awaiting answer about nice place to stay in Pattaya. I want to give my office staff a two day vacation. Any suggestions!

It might be interesting to see the thai bar girl to farang ratio increase by a factor of 10X. The bottom lime would be: "Who gets you first - Protestors, Army or TBG's" The safest farang is the one with the swiftest feet. I will be sure to pack my track shoes this Dec. Cheers........ Moke

I would not worry too much. I have been in BKK during revolutions, and protests. As long as I was not in the middle of the "action", I saw more on TV then in the streets. The media has a habit of blowing these things out of proportion, and scaring away the visitors. I guess one just has to be careful and use our "big head" for a change

I was in the riots in LA back in the early 90's...... had an AK47 with several clips fully loaded... I would have to say things were on the edge.... But the worst was when I was in the PI when they everthrew Marcos..... that was not a safe place to be as an American. Thailand is more of a carnival, a country and people that really can't handle democracy, where the show is the protest, then they talk about it for years to come, and no result to show for it..... They try as much as they can to copy what a protest is about, but the vast majority of the people are so disconnected form the real world and their own politics..... Why don't the Isaan people stand up for their rights? What part of 2 fair and complete elcections results don't people understand? Very simple, Thailand is a country that wants to be part of the outside world without giving up their own ways.... so democracy as we know it cannot exist in LOS....... The big power struggle is ahead of us, and then you may see a dangerous situation, until then, PARTY ON !!!!

Thailife: Quite an articulate analysis of Thai politics. I find that most Thai people are reserved, and do not know how to express themselves. They allow their rage to build up "inside". Months later they will say or act in a manner that is so out of character; that you simply are dumbstruck. I have personally experienced this with many Thai "friends", over the last fifteen years. You are right! democracy is something that is way over the heads of most Thais. It actually interferes with the "CARNIVAL" lifestyle found throughout the country. Thailand advertises itself as AMAZING THAILAND! It is a perfect description... I love Thailand. Its people, (especially its women) are the sweetest and friendliest. But give me a break when it comes to politics. Its Govt. can be as corrupt as any well established democracy. They take advantage of its poor, and enrich the "higher society folks". I am not bad mouthing the Thai Govt. But in a democracy, (which Thailand claims to be) you will always have serious abuses of power. Look at the U S monetary system. Each party blames the other. In truth, they are all to blame. It seems that once they get elected to office all their ethics, morals and empathy goes out the window. So let us say: Please GOD, Allow Thailand peace and prosperity. If there was any one place we men need: It is a peaceful Thailand.

I think as long as you do not get caught in the crossfire and basically steer away from the large protest you should be fine. They just posted on yahoo this morning that those 'tear gas grenades' they were using the other day were from China so they were laced with explosives. Seen that coming though, if you saw the pictures after the riots people lost limbs and some died. In a mass panic of tear gas I was wondering, even if trampled, how could someone lose their leg. Oh well TIT

As you may know Thailand has suffered 18 coups since 1932. That's right EIGHTEEN. Living in New York, I have gone through, and seen more violence. I just hope that there is no protest that causes large loss of life. Remember the people are actually fighting for less democracy now. They want the OLD way back. In either case let us pray that all parties see the light and somehow get through this...
