I have not visited Thailand for quite a while now.

Expats I know and friends who have visited recently.

They now say the prices equate, with for instance, London, UK.

London is expensive, but so is Spain, Greece and Amsterdam, to what I was used to.

So, what is the real story?

In 2008 there was 67 Baht to the pound sterling. Now it is 49 or 47, depending where one goes.

I always found Thailand affordable, but is it now?
Some expats must be in difficulties.

One thing is certain, air fares from Europe have definitely gone up.

Over to you.......

I have been back for 5 months and here is my synopsis:

Taxi's = cheap
Thai Food= if you know where to go
Hotels = good deals (even with the shitty exchange rate)
JJ Market = still good priced for shopping but they dont haggle as much as years prior
Movies = very good price for the experience

Things that are western prices:

wine = crazy f***ing expensive
Girls = Thai Friendly & Tagged are all I utilize, but if you have any "game" can still get 1000baht freelancers
Clubs = I rarely go out but the times I have yes western expensive
Mall shopping = same as west
Restaurants for western meal = same as the states

anything else you need priced?

Right on - great summary.

I would like to add that Medical & Dental are great bargains PLUS more caring staff and thus better care, by equally competent professionals. (Except for the few "Westernized" Thai hospitals with Western pricing - Bumrungrad as a prime example).

Would like to hear more about Thai Friendly & Tagged experiences.

yes GF,

I can't believe I left out medical, I just had the flu and went to Bumengrad (best hospital I have ever been to in my life) and it was $85 with no insurance coverage (at that hospital) including medicine......and yes that is the $$$ hospital but was actually a wonderful experience and well worth the $85!

St Louis hospital is where my insurance coverage is but I didnt feel like going to sathorn and they are wonderful as well....but Bumengrad was f***ing amazing!

Thaifriendly, I am 4 out of 7 for getting laid on dates and have 2 solid GIK's from that website (office girls) and they just expect dinner and attention when we see one another.....

I live off Ratchada and a movie at Central Rama 9 and market shopping after the movie will really make them feel special.

MF, you are correct tagged seems to be way more hit or miss...only been on one date from there........

Beers have gone up by 50% at gogo bars.

ST and LT up as well.

There is a clinic just next to Mike's Place hotel, that would probably charge you $30 for your flu consultation and medication. Bumrungrad is simply overpriced, they just want to push as much drugs as possible to you. A doctor once said, "we are legalized drug pushers..."

yes but they had water with "bumrungrad" on the label

the reason I went there was I needed a med certificate and got that included with my other stuff!

But still, it is the best hospital I have ever been to in my life

anyway, just to add grocery shopping is pretty much the same as the states....maybe a little cheaper.

It is cheaper just eating Thai food on my soi than buying stuff to cook!

Upcountry you could live cheaply....

Food much cheaper...accomadation....everything.

You could venture down to Bangkok once a month or Pattaya for a blow out...

Or go the local fare discreetly for the cheap arrangement.

Thailand is getting more audacious in some costs....

But if you live like a Thai and buy fresh food at markets....and make entertainment movies it's cheap....

You can live for 10 k a year including visa runs....if you had to.( country)

15 k is more comfortable... ( country... Or city like Pattaya )

20k preferred. ( includes a weekly girl from beer bar )....and social life limited.

25k....decent existence with girl often.( 6 a month)....and reasonable accomadtion.

So still better than west

250 Baht for a beer in a Gogo !

That's 8 US dollars or £5 sterling. For a bottle of rice beer containing formaldahyde to extend its drink by date.

That is very expensive.

Have hotels gone up in price as well ?

It won't be any government that destroys the nightlife industry.

It will be the economy ?
