Hello all,

I will be leaving for BKK in 48 hours - and sure enough - I broke my glasses. Now, I do have backup glasses, but just one pair - and without them I am helpless. I won't be able to get new ones before I leave (cylindrical glasses to correct astigmatism).

Where in BKK can one get decent glasses for a fair price and on short notice? It doesn't have to be the latest fashion. I need them for backup only. Do I need to bring a prescription?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

I think your best bet is to take the BTS till Ratchatewi Station and lurk around the side of the road opposite to Asia Hotel. That corner close to the 7-11 is Ratchatewi and lots of small shops available. They can fix your frames or even you can decide to make new ones. The staff members at those shops can speak decent English.

Prescription to get new glasses? No, not necessary in those shops.

NOTE. If you feel more comfortable you may try the shopping malls i.e. MBK.

What about the cost?
How does it compare to - let's say US?
Normally a pair of cheap glasses would cost me USD100 - good glasses with anit-glare, UV coating, bifocal: USD300.

I got them at MBK up on the second or third floor (not far from the center atrium area - I think on the opposite side to the main entrance) in 24 hours and cheap. Paid 4000 Baht for frames and lenses together.

He also tested my eyes and picked up that I had astigmatism, in one eye(not my cock either). So he knew what he was talking about

He also has "Off the Shelf" contact lens or specials if you need them. I got the OTS Contacts, worked pretty good, not much different to my specials. Paid Baht 2000.

Mine are also specila thin lenses, cause I am f_cken blind, well when I am pissed anyway.

I just bought my third pair of glasses in LOS yesterday.

The quality and service is better than any I have experienced in Hawaii, ever. The lens were 800baht and were ground on the premises and ready within an hour. This trip I have been shopping quite a bit and comparing prices and I think this is a standard.

Frames vary considerably in price depending on designer label, knock-off and such. Most frame prices seem to be between 1200-5200baht.

My 1st pair was bought from an optician in FortuneTownPlaza where they had an optometrist who checked my eyes on the spot and discovered a new prescrip. was in order.  My advise to you would be- take your time, shop for selection and value and don't think about a back up setm but rather shop around and get a super pair of new, just-what-you-always-wanted pair of glasses while here.

BUT! Talk price up front and inquire IF the lenses are included in price. My going back a second time to merchant who'd already sold me 2 pairs only resulted in their jacking up my 2nd shopping trips prices about 3ooobaht too high.

Here in Pattaya at present, I see optical shops are all over the place and very nice selections in all.
