Only been to LOS once, but fell in love with it. So did my husband. Once we were satiated, we would deal with small talk. Personally, I love to drag the life stories out of protitutes. I've doen it to a few, in Korea, America, and now Thiland. Very interesting. One came form a small farming community. Her father was deeply in debt. They had a small lean-to type of shack (best I could understand) where the whole family lived. One room and six brothers and sisters. She finished what would be about a fourth-grade level education before being forced to work on the farm so the family could eat one meal a day.
They had no hot water--for that matter, they had no running water, and dirt floors.
A pretty woman came back to the village then, complete with fancy clothes and a car (woooooo!!! ahhhh!!!!!). Her father asked the woman if she could take his daughter with her to go into "service." So she ended up in Pattaya. A 22 year-old Thai Janet Jackson look-alike. She insists that her parents do not know what she does, that she tells them she is merely in "service."
She wants to finish school and become a police officer. She's a gun lover, too (we even found a kindred spirit in Thailand!!!). However, she had no plans as to how she was going to finish school. No idea of how much it cost, or anything. She'll never do it, I know. It's sad.
Another girl was married to a Thai man, and has two children by him, until she left him. Wasn't real clear as to why she left him. She was 38 (if I remember correctly) but beautiful. Her mother lived with her, and she was being a hostess (not a prostitute) for a long time. We found her, and I guess when we asked for her, the money was probably too much to resist for a couple of hours work. She had to be home by 2:30 a.m. though, or her mother would go on a rampage, suspecting she'd turned the corner to being a prostitute. She had beautiful kids, and I thought it was special how she was going out of her way to take care of them. She insisted that if it was in her power, her daughter would go to school as long as her son.
It's sad, but it's true. Prostitution is not nearly as acceptable in LOS as we like to think it is. Girls are still horrified at the thought of their parents knowing what they do.

I like to talk to the girls also, seems like most like the money and short hours. Sometimes they enjoy the customers most times they don't. Girls said it was their choice if they wanted to go with a guy. Told me they kept all the money. They seem to exercise free will.

Well...... many of the girls come from very poor families who " don't know what their daughter is doing". As you say, publically prostitution is not widely accepted. But eqaully it is not widely condemned, but for financial reasons.
I often spend time chatting to girls in the smaller bar areas. Frankly I often feel like giving them their spending money before sending them of to school, rather than thinking about any sexual activity. But this is Thailand and different and I have come to love the place. I can get pretty angry when brutality and child abuse creep into the scenario. Goodness knows the Thai scene is abused enough as it is.
So we should treat the whole scene and culture with the repect that it deserves

Sup' everyone,
It is very sad why many females had to become a "working" female and the type of abuse they probably still get at home. It's sad that they work, while many of their family members are lazy and just do nothing.
I have to disagree with the notion that the parents do not know what their daughters are doing. The reason being is that how else can their daughters be able to bring in so much money. When I mean so much, I mean more then the average Thai worker. I have been told that the females tell their parents that they are a secretary, but I am sure the parents have some sort of idea how much a secretary makes. Also, many of these females did not finish high school, so how can you get a professional job without an education?? And, through the females own addition, working as a sales person in a department store did not bring in enough money and that is why she is not working as a working female. Again, the parents cannot be that "clueless"!!!
I think that it's just a case of the Asian "saving face", as well as an excuse for the females not to do the overnight thing!! The parents turn a blind eye so that others will not think that they are pushing their daughters into prostitution. This will allow them to save face.

Totally agree with you there ABC.
Having travelled around with my TG, I am absolutely convinced that the two drivers of poverty and saving face have worked out a blend of co-habitation. This is not criticism or judgement, just observation.

I'm with ABC / Dave, - you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work out whats happenng when in the average i-sarn village, most homes are 1 room wooden shacks, but occasionally we see a nice concrete place with air-con, TV and a new motorbike out front, plus they have a young good looking daughter .... and remember, there are FAMILIES in I-sarn, who live on 2000bt per YEAR ! - OK, so Buddahs words, that there is rice in the field and fish in the river, is taken advantage of, - but certainly now-days, given the choice, no doubt Mr. up-country, [Ban-nok] farmer, would far sooner he have a couple of good looking daughters, than a couple of healthy buffaloe TIT.

Sorry about those #'s. It's another Microsoft bug. Those #'s are
ASCII codes that MS Word is placing in the forum behind the scenes. I first write my responses in MS Word so that my spelling is correct. Because of this, when I copy and paste the words into the forum, it also copies some of the hidden code behind it. But, I have found that this only happens to quotation marks and the apostrophes. I will now copy it to notepad and then back into the forum. It's a personal thing, but I can not stand when I misspell something. I left one of those bugs below, so you can see that it replaces the apostrophe with a string of numbers.

I'm agree with Dave, bkkz, and ThaiPrivateEye.
One last thing to think about on the subject do their parents know or not. What professional job pays a decent wage without a college education that takes places at NIGHT!!! I mean. The working females get home at all hours of the night and sleep till afternoon the next day. How can you be a secretary or work at a department store??? Which of these are open at those hours?? Now, I realize this only takes into account the ones that say they live at home. Now the ones that do live at home say they tell their parents they are at a friends house, so they can spend the night. And how often are they staying at their friends house?? ha ha ha!! But even that excuse does not explain the weird hours they are suppose to be working!! Ha ha ha ha!!
And the new house in the middle of a village is a dead give away to what profession brings in the money for that household!! Unless, again, they are telling their parents they have a rich foreign boyfriend.
And yes, I don't think there is a solution to this problem and if there was I do not think that we would want to get into it.
