I would suggest that you consider alternatives. Not because they are necessarily cheaper, but because they are quicker.

Namely, the Skytrain. For example, from Suk to Patpong: quicker than a taxi I'd say.

Tuk tuks are not much cheaper than taxis, and sometines do not move much quicker. But a litel more of an adventure!

It's a bad idea to use taxis/tuk tuks everywhere unless you're rolling in money.

Don't get tuk-tuks because if they know you are a tourist (and they will!), they'll rip you off. Charge you around 5 times the proper price.

Taxis will also rip you off if you get into one and don't ask for the meter. Just get in a taxi and if he doesn't try on the meter, say "Meter" and he'll turn it on (then you'll get the proper rate). If he doesn't, tell him to stop and find another taxi.

Mansaturday is right about the Skytrain. Depending on where you are going, it's a lot faster to just get the Skytrain (eg, to Pantip, MBK, Patpong, Pratunam, etc).

Taxis are usually how I get around BKK unless I'm with my wife (then it's tuk-tuk; they won't rip her off because she's Thai). Pretty much anywhere you are going to go around BKK will be under 100 baht a trip. Very cheap.

If you're by yourself and only going a short distance, take a motorcycle taxi. Cheapest and fastest (though most dangerous) way to get around.

When I lived in BKK I started off usin' TUK TUKs but I soon realised that the polution (especially the smell, dunno about the toxic fumes!) was terrible! My clothes stank of diesel, sulphur etc., after 10 mins. I moved onto taxis and found them to be the best option in most cases although that was pre-Skytrain so that might be your best first choice.

Motorcys are amazin'! They give you a crash helmet that resembles a wellused Tupperware bowl, they stop inches behind the exhaust pipe of the vehicle in front and proceed at breakneck speed at all other times on the road, pavement/sidewalk etc! After usin' a motorcycle taxi your clothes smell, your full of polution and you're quiverin' like a scared jelly. Great fun though!

Don't just look at the price of the transport or how quickly it can get you from A to B because B might be the hospital!

Are you serious? I live in Oz & a ride from the airport to my place (5 minutes) is a tad under $10 (300 BHT). I caught a cab from Suk Soi 23 to Nana and the meter stopped at 43 BHT & this was thru all the back street back onto to Soi 3, amazingly cheap. Taxis are definitely the way to go on most occasssions.

I used a Tuk Tuk once, terrible things!! as other posters have said their smelly, noisy, hot and you get all the fumes from the traffic around, the drivers are a pain in the arse. The only Tuk Tuk ride I take now is the courtesy one from infront of the Rembrandt Hotel down to Sukhumvit, the drivers in uniform and calls out 'hang on' as he drives away.

The Skytrain is the best option to get round town, it's fast, has AC and great eye candy.

Other than that it's a cab, but do make sure the AC is working the driver turns on the meter or negotiate the fare before hand. Do be carefull when deciding which as the meter can go through the roof if you hit a lot of traffic jams especialy if it's raining. It took a hire car 2hrs to get me to the Rembrandt from the airport in very heavy rain and it was a busy Monday.
The start rate of ThB 35 gets you a fair way along Sukhumvit if you don't hit traffic or too many lights. But do workout the oneway system before getting into a cab. For instance Nana to Soi Cowboy, there's a no right turn out of Soi 4 <Soi Nana> So you walk right out of NEP cross Sukh at the police post and get a cab there but do watch out for the BiB doing cab pulls.

There's several new fleets of cabs running now so pick a good one, leave the old red uns go by. Jumped into a brand new for a short trip from bank to hotel and negotiated a ThB1000 fare to Pattaya including tolls, it was great even had to turn the AC down.

Tuk Tuks are for newbies and fun the first few times.
I must agree about the sky train being excellent, but I often find myself on the back of a motor-bike taxi,, cheap, fast, even in traffic and in my opinion very safe ( 45-50 trips not a single incident).
