Tq guys for your reply but my estimated arrival time is 11.45 am. By that time will the jam be bad?

My flight always arrives at 1045 AM and I'm usually in the taxi by 1130 and off to the Dynasty on soi 4. Never any traffic problems, usually only about a 20 minute ride for about 250 B. Probably a bit farther to soi 15 but no worries...except for maybe a cheeky taxi driver trying to negotiate a fare (which they are not supposed to do but sometimes do anyway) instead of using the meter. Just tell him to use the meter and remember that you must pay the tolls. Just hand the guy a 100 baht bill and say 'tollway' or 'expressway" til he understands.

Once again Dr Love doesn't know what he's talking about.

If you go upstairs to the departure area to catch a cab. The cabbie will assume you are a old BKK hand and throw the meter on and take you to where you want to go with a minimum of hassle. I've done this many times and not once have I had to tell the guy to turn on meter. Tell him to take the toll way and you pay the tolls.

True, for the reasons stated in this thread the drivers are scoring a fare they wouldn't ordinarilly get. I've only had one refuse to use the meter and I just took the next taxi that showed up 30 seconds later.

To illustrate how eager they are to get another fare, I've flagged down a taxi that was across all the lanes from me and just about to go down the exit ramp. My friend and I ran out to the cab in view of a traffic cop and he still used the meter.

The first few times I've gone upstairs I looked out the window first to see the mob of people in the taxi line. Now I don't bother. If you were on a plane with a few hundred people there will be a line downstairs. I usually see 1 or two other people snagging cabs upstairs but nowhere near as bad as the downstairs line.

Yes you can get to Pattaya by taxi. Usually 1K plus tolls. Give a shout in baggage claim and see if anyone is going to Pattaya and share a ride.

its about 125-150 baht meter plus tolls in the middle of the night on the meter, add 50 baht airport fee if you get from taxi line, add 50-100 baht tip if the driver is cool.

This was average of 4 trips the last week

cheap compared to any other big city

1. Toll from Din Daeng to Ploenchit is 40 baht, toll from Airport to Din daeng is 20 baht

2. If the queue upstairs is too much, just walk across to the road

3. time to arrive shouldn't be vastly different day or night, since lunchtime on the express way is usually no too bad anyway; just the offramp can be a bit packed

4. The so called touts; they are providing a higher class of service, and I have used them before when I brought in a windsurfing sail and mast which is around 3m long, and wouldn't fit in a car. You can ask for a Benz or BMW or whatever; 600b to one of the further away hotels like say the Peninsula is not that bad; compared to a taxi ride from the airport to say Santa Monica in LAX would probably be more. It just so happens that there is much cheaper outside, but horses for courses yeah?

5. You could get one all the way to Pattaya; 1000b + you will have to pay around 115b or so in tolls.... for this get a decent cab 'cause it can trim a bit of time off the trip.... the minibuses and benzes can also take you down there, but that is quite a bit more, maybe 2500b I would guess (totally not sure abou this, I got quoted on it, but cannot remember)

6. Yeah, for the tolls you have to pay as you go through, so the best idea is to hand him the 20 baht for the first toll, and 40 baht for the second one as you are approaching the toll station.... that way you cover it as you go through, rather than letting him pay and reimbursing him

In my experience, people driving new cabs (e.g. altis, new Nissan, new Mitsu, etc) are for the most part honest; they need to be better drivers usually to be allowed to rent a more expensive car, and also they have to earn money in their shift, so they can't afford to be waiting around for a bozo to scam. Plus it is safer and more reliable; the express way is 100km+; do you want to be doing that speed in a 10 year old car with a million km on the clock?

waxhead, your last point about new cab is very valid. Last time I was in BKK, the crazy taxi-idiot thought he was going to show me off on who the boss was and drove like 150-160 km on the Expressway. The car was at least 10 years old and you could feel everything rattling and shaking loose as he sped on. He was doing the stock car racing thing where he would get real close to the rear end of the car in front, almost touching and then swing hard around to overtake the guy, just like the Indy500. He also needed a new brake pad like 6 months ago but WTF, it's only his life and mine, and I didn't think he was that concerned about either. Only thing I was thinking the whole time was : " damn, he probably doesn't have any god damn insurance ! ". I usually just let the "tout" take me to the newer car which are parked in a seperate area. They would take the baggages from you upon arrival and you do not have to stand in any line. Yes, it costs twice as much ( usually 500 bahts), but after 20+ hours of flight time, I just wanted to get to the hotel. They also understand English much better and know exactly where the hotels were in BKK. The taxi line outside the airport is sometimes quite long and moves very slowly. Just don't have the patience for that.

Good point on the new taxi. I never get into those old heaps, either at the airport or anywhere else. There are thousands of newer cars around and I've never had any driver of a new car try the 'meter no work' bullshit.

Just as an aside, it costs those guys 500 baht for a twelve hour period to hire the new taxis, or 900 baht for 24 hours. The older cars cost 500 baht for 24 hours. It takes a lot of fares to make a decent living!
