hggcraig,
You're a young guy that's a picky eater in that you only like American/English food, eh? So do you like the heat of say a chilli con carne? How about any Chinese food? Ever like eating that? Thai food isn't dissimilar. If you don't like hot or spicy food, then fair enough. But there is plenty of Thai food that isn't hot and spicy.
I have two children of 23 and 25 who were also "picky" eaters, but whose tastes are maturing with them. Perhaps your eating habits have been established from quite a tender age and you made up your mind that you didn't like certain foods and therefore haven't tried eating them since.
Why not try something that isn't too spicy like Pad Thai and see how you go?
I think that it is a crying shame that you are visiting the home of one of the World's great cuisines and you might already have made up your mind that you won't like it, not even having sampled it.
Look, try something and if you don't like it, then what has it cost? 30bt from a street cart, or 100bt in a simple family restaurant?
I don't see you shying away from sampling the lovely Thai girls on the basis that you haven't tried them before.......

I eat it all...once upon a time it was pancakes, steaks, and big macs, seafood resturants....now I eat spicy small fish..little shell things (that give you a big hard on a few hours later) pork that lays in the heat with some sweaty fat thai woman feebly waving the flies away. Like eggs? I have had lots of eggs, and snake eggs are a must.. Ducks blood with warm livers...killed in front of you country style...snake in thai whiskey and honey spice sauce burnt just alittle. I eat fruit the birds back home (the ones that fly leave alone) I have had dried maggots, squid my favorite, and once had black dog livers with papaya.. (but didnt know it was dog) I suck the eggs out of the kings prawns in garlic, eat fish eyes, and sepants head soup.....Dont mind the odd beetle with mangoe crunchies......and never ask about the soups contents...this is all true and once I was like you..fussy....now I dont eat much foreign food either, but I still eat the odd cheese burger or KfC suprisingly it makes me just feel sick its so full of foreign preservatives and reminds me to much of fat arsed farang woman. "'up to you"'

A fellow Englishman who's young, but doesn't appear to like foreign food? I'm amazed. Surely, it's still de rigeur for any young buck to go down the boozer, sink 6/7 pints of lager on a Saturday night and follow it up with the strongest Vindaloo / Phall that he can find. As for both Chinese and Indian restaurants, they're so ubiquitous in Blighty that they almost provide the archetypal British National cuisine. And you presumably don't like that stuff? Weird!....hehehe
If you did like food from India and China and you haven't tried Thai food, then it is somewhere in between. If you were going to Korea, you might end up eating dog, but in Thailand, you're far more likely to be eating pussy.

Mr Alan
The US is a multi-ethnic society and most of the time Americans eat "foreign food" when eating out. Maybe it is somewhat Amercanized foreign food, but it is foreign food.

BTW, as I pereviously mentioned, the Thai food in most US cities is excellent, much better on average than what you get in LOS.

HGG,

I strongly suggest trying some different types/styles of cuisine. It truly heightens the overall experience. If you are a first timer, thai girls seem to get this perverse pleasure in feeding you food you have not tried before. Perhaps there are other things they can teach you......

My money is you will end up trying some thai dishes.

Mr Alan
If you don't like Asian food in your own country, you probably won't like it any better in Thailand.

But I am not sure I would classify your tastes as "picky". Maybe "unsophisticated" is more accurate.

Interestingly, English restaurants in the US are somewhat unusual, and Americans consider the food to be fairly bland.

Multi-ethnic? I suppose that's the difference between US English and British English. The average quaity of Thai food that I've sampled in the US is poor (worse than the UK even). Indian food in the US is on a par with Germany -- inedible. Chinese food is often very good.
