Thanks for your comments guys and the warnings. Caution and planning are two of our watchwords in this venture and it is good that you are saying the same thing.

So far as our contacts in Pattaya are concerned, I know these people also, I have met them many times, and believe they know what they are talking about. However, we do not intend to invite any of them to be involved with our business venture, when it eventually gets started, and if my earlier posts lead you to that conclusion then I have not expressed myself very well.

That said, there is no doubt a lot to be said for having access to a Thai "fixer" when needed - but caution very important again.

Location is still under consideration and it seems I also failed to communicate that very well. You are right that it makes little sense to open a business in an area where you are in competition with many hundreds of already established venues, unless the market demand is still unfilled or you have a selling point that gives you a competitive edge.

We are keeping an open mind about location - Bangkok, Pattaya, Korat, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Huan Hin and Cha-am are all possibilities. As are some smaller provincial towns where we would definitely have to focus on Thai customers as farangs would be in short supply.

We are also working on ideas to bring customers through the door, although it is clear from this website that it will be difficult to come up with something that has not been tried before while still remaining on the right side of the law.

Please keep the advice coming. It all helps no matter how negative or positive it may at first seem. As it could be a couple of years before we invest the cash we are still at a very early stage of researching and planning this. To my mind this website, and the sections of it dealing with massage, give invaluable advice on this business area. Everybody involved with the site - not least the members who post messages - should be congratulated.

The license for a soapy is upwards of 100 million Baht per location. This was about 10 years ago. Probably more now.

I wonder what % of male sex tourist that come to Thailand are interested in a straight massage with no extras. I for one am not interested.

You probably will get a better return on investment buying your home country government bonds. The upside, no hassle with customer like me looking for "extras".

If the target is 'sex tourists', then the market is quite low. If the target is 'non-sex tourists' and people here for business purposes, the market is high (although the supply is high as well).

For me this would not so much be an investment where I was trying to get a realistic return on my money. I think of it more as a life style investment. The big thing for me would be not having to get up to work for somebody else everyday, and the freedom for my wife and I to spend more time together. Living in LOS would also be a big plus.

As long as we could clear enough to cover our daily food and drink we figure we could live a very happy life in Thailand. We would keep a financial reserve for emergencies.

We would not be encouraging extras as we want to keep on the right side of the law. That said, once the staff have pulled the curtain and started work it is out of my hands (no pun intended). Anyway as I will not be working in the business I will leave it for my Thai wife to decide how to deal with those kinds of staff issues.

since when do you start a business and hope everything goes well. is this how business is conducted in thailand? no wonder as I walk the streets of bkk invariably I see no customers in many businesses, only employees laying on their back contemplating who knows what.

I think customers like you won't be looking for extras, as long as the establishment clearly posts their prices.
