Quote: from philly on 11:33 pm on July 5, 2005 The problem I found with speaking a "little" thai, is that the better I get at my few phrases, people start answering me in thai, and I immediately have to protest that I do not speak thai. So they have to start over in English -- I mean usually they smile, but it does make me wonder why I'm doing it, I guess for the fun of learning thai, but certainly not yet enough for real communication. So if you say "Doa Rai?" and they answer "Sip song baht," you need to know what that means too.
Bloody Thais. Replying to questions in Thai in Thai. Don't they realise you are an imperialist, and that they should be damn well honoured that you made the effort and that you certainly don't have any intention of thinking how to make a reply in their stupid language.
Once in a Hong Kong restaurant I tried to order in Chinese, and the waiter said "Sir, I did not work my way through college learning English to stand here and try to figure out what you're trying to say, so please order in English." We both had a good laugh at that one.
Was the laugh after you replied "no, you obviously worked your way through college so you could be a waiter."

I agree, if u know the basic greetings and a few words they might like it. thai locals certainly are grateful, that u take time to learn their langauge But if you come across as knowing too much,, it keeps the girls guard up.

Speaking the local language well is always an advantage in a P4P situation. Takng the time to learn a few phrases is more or less a mark of respect and the girl might appreciate it, but that level of language knowledge doesn't carry many tangible benefits. If a provider is wary of a foreigner who converse with her in a meaningul manner in her own language, it probably means she's up to no good and should be avoided anyway. Most P4P girls, whether in Thailand or elsewhere, will be thrilled to find a foreign customer who speaks their language- it makes the session, especially L/T, go much easier. It usually means you get the best price and service she has to offer.

I found better this way Due to the general mix of girls in places like NANA cow boy etc for the most they come from the North east. What I do is talk in broken Thai and listen to them talk in Isaan as they are fully aware that there are a few ferang around that speak thai so they use Isaan for there hidden language, then later on, before I go for instance I say some things in Isaan and watch there faces go red and they say "You Understand what we say before". My answer is “yes”, then I answer some of the things they have said and go home. Trust me when you go back into that bar next time it’s a hole new story. Disclaimer as this is what you have to do this on this forum now. 1 I did not say that all bars/soapy’a etc are only Isaan girls. 2 No I do not believe I can speak fluent Thai/Isann 3 No I do not only go to NANA and Soi Cow boy they where an EG 4 Yes I am sure that there are places in the north east that do not all speak Isann 5 Yes I know that there are 3 or 4 other ways of saying the name of the language spoke from the north east of Thailand 6 I am sure that there are other more local languages that the girls use as well, I am not saying that they only use Isaan. 7 Yes sometimes the girls do not always respond to this. 8 Yes when they do it is not always in Isaan or thai or English it might be one of these 9 OK When I go back into the bar they do not always remember me. OK I hope that covers it all. Who’s buying the beers.

UK Shaga has good points. Great post. I'll add that learning some Isaan phrases is easy once you know a little Thai and it is fun to get curious, confused looks from the girls. Try speaking only English with a girl in the bar, then when you are in the taxi, say to the driver "soi sow hok krup" in the correct tone (Soi 26) and look at the girls face, then answer that look with "koi wow boor dai krup". Then don't speak Thai or Isaan the rest of the night. Great fun.

Last trip to Pattaya was in April, one mid-afternoon I jumped into the back of a songtaew in Soi 2 headed to the Beach Road, 3 guys and one BG already in the back but nobody travelling together. The guy near the girl who was opposite me asked her in Thai where something was. She replied she didn't know. One of the other guys said in Thai that it was in Soi 8, that got a look from the girl as did when the other guy corrected him, also in Thai, saying no not Soi 8 soi 6. The girl looked at me with a look that said "Jeezus, get this....you to?". I leant forward and said in Thai, "Be careful. I think that many farangs here know too much". Even at the time I thought that we were all showing off that we could speak Thai (a little), but it ilustrated something I have noticed in the last couple of years, farangs who can speak Thai are becoming far more common. Enjoy.

Been here for a decade now and I have never, not once, had a Thai girl react negatively when I spoke Thai with her. Why is it when Thais speak English we think nothing of it, as if it was expected of them. If a Thai makes a mistake when speaking English, we make endless fun of their errors...but if a farang speaks Thai (even a little) he is clever and knows too much?
